Question of the Week

Question for the week of September 22, 2003:

Our question this week comes Jay C:

I would like to know how many of you quilters out there are men/ know of men who quilt. I sometimes feel a bit lonely quilting all by myself (Brisbane, Australia), but the Internet sure helps. Also, how many of you men/the men you know who quilt are interested in miniature quilts (I have just discovered them and am hooked!)?

ChynaPntr :
I was in our local quilt shop and a man came in to buy fabric. The man asked if we would like to see his quilts. He was a salesman and traveled the country. He pieces the quilt top while at home and hand quilts while on the road in his hotel room in the evenings. This sure beats sitting in a bar. I must say he put us all to shame. I have never seen more beautiful quilts and the hand quiting was outstanding. He must have a computer and with any luck he may see your request.

Louise :
My niece and her husband both quilt. (He works in the insurance business and is a Lt.Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve.) They sit across from each other, on either side of the quilt frame, and quilt. They've made some beautiful quilts that way.
caroline :
up north here, we have a group of male quilters named "Men of the Cloth". When I tell my priest about this, he smiles. I have yet to see a "man of the cloth" yet, I tell him. Our quilting group at the church hall has yet to see our "man of the cloth" put one stitch in anything we are quilting!
Sunny Stufflebeam :
I was at Sandwich Fair early September in Sandwich, IL... one man had entered (and won ribbons) for a quilted piece. While visiting Paducah several years ago and touring the Quilt Museum there - large quilt done by a man - I don't know anyone personally. Now that you have raised the question, I will pay closer attention when I go to quilt shows, etc. Keep quilting...
Marion :
My husband volunteered to be in charge of the family reunion quilt one year. Well, guess who did all the work. He did contribute two blocks, both with rather large squares and rectangles -- that is, easy blocks. As he was sweating bullets over the 1/4 inch seam (he is an engineer, which means no deviation from that 1/4 inch) I said "Some of us consider this relaxing." For some reason I had to leave the room! But he really likes the patterns that come through, and if he had any extra time he would probably learn not to sweat while sewing!

Jean :
Dude. Go to Paducah, Kentucky and look at the room FULL of man-made quilts. Join a quilt guild and be proud. I am infatuated with miniatures. Have you seen/tried Brenda Groulx's patterns? Rock on, quilting man.
