Question of the Week

Question for the week of December 16, 2002:

Our question this week comes Karen:

I am considering a new table for my sewing room. What styles do you like and what sites are best on the web.

Carolyn Reyeur :
My husband is quit handy, so we purchased a corner unit computer stand. We did not purchase the upper unit that came with the set. He then removed on leg from the end unit and applied it to the corner unit. Then we went to a good sewing center and purchased a machine lowering and retriving -up and down- unit. With a little bit of work, and a good sale price at a Home Depot store I now have a 250.00 great corner, Large sewing table -with drawers on each side.

Gene :
I would suggest you make your own table.

First, though, buy yourself a comfortable and adjustable chair. Sit in the chair and adjust it so your legs are bent at the knee in a 90 degree angle (right angle). Then measure the distance from the floor to just above your knees. Add 1-2 inches to allow space to move your legs up and down.

Then take this measurement and go shopping for cubes, bedside tables, etc. (unfinished furniture stores are great places to find well made and less expensive items like these). When you find ones the correct height, buy 3. These become the "legs" or supports for the top.

Next go to a Lowe's, Menards, Home Depot, etc. and look through their kitchen counter top area. Buy an L-shaped top: the longest part of the L should be positioned to your left, the shortest section is where you place your machine.

The advantages to this is that the left side (longest part) holds the weight of your quilts and projects; they don't drag on the floor and get pulled out of shape or stretch. You will be able to sew more comfortably because your posture is correct (think ergonomics). Plus the cubes or bedside tables hold lots of supplies. And this kind of table can be made as long or as short as you wish. And of course it is personally made to fit you. Mine is 8 feet on the long side and 4 feet on the short part where my machine is and because I'm short, it is only 23 inches high.
