Question of the Week

Question for the week of March 4, 2002:

Our question this week comes reesemonkey

Can you rubber stamp on muslin with fabric ink and then quilt it? Is the fabric ink is permanent? Has anyone ever tried this?

Polly Burkeen :
Yes, you can stamp on the muslin with fabric ink or acrylic paint with fabric medium added. Be sure to heat set the paint and follow the manufacturers directions. I have done this several times with good results.

Bernie Hamm :
Just remember that if you are using permanent ink, and then you use those lines as your quilting lines, the ink will still be there and you will be able to see it after the quilting is finished!
Ann :
I have stamped onto other 100% cotton fabric and quilted it and washed it without any problems. It did not wash out.
Pat :
Yes, you can use rubber stamps on fabric. I make a lot of my labels that way. What you need to be sure of is that the stamp pad is made for use on fabrics, and that it has permenant ink. After you have stamped your image you can use permenant fabric markers and pens to colour it in. Pigma and Zig are two examples of permenant fabric pens. It's also a good idea to heat set the image with an iron. Have Fun!!!
