Question of the Week

Question for the week of September 17, 2001:

Our question this week comes from Carol Richardson

I would like to make a charm quilt with a different fabric for each block. My query is, what block shapes can I use? I know that I can use triangles, squares and the tumbler shape in a charm quilt - are there any other blocks that other quilters have had success with?

Susan :
Find the book Beyond Charm Quilts, by McIntee and Porath, That Patchwork Place Publishers. They have some amazing ideas.

caroline :
You might try to divide your charms into lights and darks. Then use the drunkard's path: the concave light and the convex dark (and vice versa).

Or make stars, using all three : light , medium and dark.

Many quilters do not use curve pieces, and they are missing the boat!

Good luck , Caroline.

Linda St Andre :
I just saw a charm quilt at my friend's home that was done in the English paper piecing method. Small hexagons. Very nice technique for a charm quilt.
