Question of the Week

Question for the week of May 31, 1999:

Our question this week comes from Robyn

I once heard a story that when one completes a charm quilt of 1000 pieces, a woman will marry. Is this true? How do I find out about more quilt lore stories?

Caroline :
Of course its true! A woman will marry: they always have, with or without a charm quilt being made!LOL.
But if I were interested in quilt lore stories, I would find some books in the library, or go to a museum (preferably to a textile museum) and look for the information. Sometimes one could go where the older people are and listen to their stories. Take a tape recorder and ask for their permission to record and perhaps you may have enough info to write a magazine article or somesuch.
Wouldn't it be interesting to do a "Travels with Charlie" like Steinbeck did!

betty :
It is true according to folk lore. There are many reference books on quilting and the women who make them. One that is very good is "pieces of the past" by Nancy Martin. Any books written as a result of quilt documentation are usually full of quilt lore. Hope this helps.
