Question of the Week

Question for the week of April 26, 1999:

Our question this week comes from Henry Dykehouse

Does anyone have a suggestion to replace our Round Robin at guild? We need something new & mysterious

Sally Parrish :
How about a Mystery Quilt?

LKO :
Our bee had a challenge where we picked one slip of paper from each of 3 baskets. One basket had a different color on each slip of paper. The second basket contained "method" slips of paper, such as - appliqued border, 3 pieced blocks, "at least one triangle", pieced border, or curved piecing. The third basket contained "items", such as teddy bear, flower, tea cup, butterfly, hobby horse, etc. Each person made a quilt any size they wanted but it had to include on the quilt each of the 3 items selected from the baskets plus anything else they cared to include. It was really fun seeing the creativity in each quilt. I had to make my quilt using a teddy bear, the color pink and flat piping.

Our guild did a challange block and then drew one block and that person won all the blocks and just needed to put them together to make a whole quilt. Our favorite challange was a Black and White and One color. YOU could use any black, any white and any other one color. The results were fantastic !!!!
scrappykat >^..^< :
Why not have a secert friend block exchange for a 12 1/2" block and see all the ooooooohhhh and aaaaaahhhhh's come about*
we do this every third month and find it to be a good thing in our guild!

We did the brown bag thing. We wrote the owners name on the brown bag & when it exchanged hands at each mtg. we added our own name to it & then you knew who had worked on the project of a particular brown bag. But we started the bag with a small designed block to begin with & then each person added what they felt like adding. We had 9 people in our group at the time. It went fairly fast. We also did a strip trade. We settled on a combination of colors (pink & green) & we had to have enough strips of ea color to trade with ea person. I think it amounted to 2"strips for ea person & each color. We had light pink & green, medium pink & green and dark pink & green. We had a blast figuring up how much ea person had to buy in order to make sure everyone got their share. We separated the bundles & had them ready to exchange at a specific mtg. It was like Christmas when we got our strips. Suggestions of what type of quilts were posted along with the instructions for the 2"strips.
Judy in SW Washington :
How about an" ugly" fabric challenge? If everyone brings a brown bag with a fat quarter of their "ugly" fabric and swap bags, sight unseen, they could add an appropriate number of other fabrics and make a block/wallhanging, etc.,
keeping a square of the "ugly" fabric
to pin to the finished product. If these are done in secret, numbers could be assigned for a vote at the meeting when they're shown for best use/worst fabric, etc.
Henry Dykehouse :
Why don't you use a mystry quilt? It works for others.

I saw something that looked fun in a magazine once. The basic idea was for everyone to bring a brown paper sack with one piece of material, a yard perhaps. Then they would write their "theme" on the bag, say teddy bears, hearts, whatever. Then the bag is passed through the group with each person having a certain time limit set, and they would have to make a block using bits of the enclosed material, and follow the theme. I'm sure there was a card within the bag that told specifics to each project, such as who it went to next etc....the surprise wallhanging isn't revealed until the recipient receives his/her bag back. I'm sorry if this isn't real clear, I'm remembering off the top of my head. But I'm sure you get the general idea. I thought it sounded fun as everyone would get to contribute to each thing in some way, and there's a surprise for everyone in the end. If you'd like, I can dig up the magazine and read more carefully. Please e mail me at jaguar@mwt.net if you want the complete instructions. Good luck!

We needed something new and inexpensive for a quilt to be put in our silent auction. 6 - 7 of our church ladies responded by making 2 - 3 blocks. Any colour , any design, and I asked for 12 1/2" blocks, knowing that not too many would be that size. I put a 2 week time limit on receipt, and then after church laid the blocks on a table so that the givers could say where the blocks should be in the quilt. Because the sizes differed, I used different sized borders to make all the blocks the same size: 14". The only cost was for the sashing, the border, and the batting and backing. We received bids and the highest was $500.00 Canadian. Everyone enjoyed contributing to this quilt. A new way to make the quilt, somewhat mysterious.
