Question of the Week

Question for the week of June 23, 1997:

Our question this week comes from Janet McGehean

I have read that quilting is much easier with silk thread. Is there a noticable difference?

Barbara Vlack :
Silk thread glides through fabric very easily, and quilting with it is wonderful. You do have to know that silk is a natural fiber that is stronger than cotton, so I would recommend quilting with silk on a quilt that would not get hard use so you would not risk damaging the cotton fabric with the stronger fiber. To demonstrate how stong silk is, I worked on a group quilt that was all silk. We hand quilted it with threads we unraveled from silk broadcloth! The silk was strong enough for that. You can't do that with cotton thread raveled from cotton broadcloth.

DaleAnne :
I use Silk thread for hand applique it glides so easily, only use cotton quilting threads to QUILT
Bea Sullivan :
I use silk thread for hand applique. Tire brand works well. It glides through the fabric, especially if you use straw needles. I have never used silk for anything else.
patchpoket :
you should always quilt with the
same fiber of your fabric.
