The DAR Museum is home to over 250 American made quilts, most with documented histories. The earliest quilt in the collection dates prior to the Revolutionary War and the latest ca. 1930. Most were made prior to 1860. The Museum is known for its outstanding collection of early chintz quilts.
A permenant display of up to eight quilts rotate at least twice a year. Located at the back of the Museum gallery, it is free and open to the public. Quilts are on exhibition in four of the 33 period rooms. These are seen by guided tour only, between the hours of 10:00am and 2:30pm Monday through Friday and from 1:00pm to 5:00pm Sunday. The Museum is closed Saturdays and Holiday weekends and Holiday Mondays.
A one and a half hour program is held the first Thursdays of most months from 10:30am to 12:00. At least 25 quilts from the collection are studied. Advance reservations are required. The fee is $10 per person. Special arrangements for large groups may be made.
A Textile Identification clinic is held the last Wednesdays of most months from 1:00 to 3:00pm. The curator will attempt to identify any pre-twentieth century American made or used textile. Advance reservations are required. The fee is $10 per object.
The Museum contains a Decorative Arts Library which is open to the public by reservation.
