Subject: sewing and work and Christmas projects
Hi, all,
Velma, I'm so glad (in one way) that I didn't start quilting until after
I took early retirement (I was a college instructor) because I would
definitely have been torn between work and "play" - quilting, that is.
So I sympathize with you! I really admire the women who manage to fill
5 - or 10-minute spaces with quilting. Not sure I could do that - not
well enough organized.
There are so many great Christmas projects in the latest issues of all
the quilt magazines - hope I have time (and perseverence) to complete at
least some...

Subject: imperfect quilts
Well ladies and gents? (do we have any here?)... I
have been sewing since I was 12, am 43 now and have
made lined full length coats, suits, clothing,
draperies, etc. But as for quilting, I consider
myself an intermediate, but I try so very hard to not
screw something up, but alas, after it's all done I
usually find my trademark, a teeny, tiny hole, yes a
hole!. You see I do alot of rotary cutting and
machine patchwork and sometime when I am easing in
those seams to match, I guess I just didn't cut
something just right, and I sqwinch (is that a word)
the seam so small to make it all work, I don't know it
as I am doing it, but sure enough... usually a hole.
so I hand mend it, there's nothing else I can do.
Nobody ever notices but me, and I am trying to not cut
so fast and be more accurate about cutting and 1/4"
and it's getting better, but the love I have for my
quilts and quilting, would NEVER stop me from a
project as long as I liked the quilt. Life is not
perfect, some of life's best things come from mistakes
and recovery... don't let quilting be any different.
Be happy and make lots of quilts, and maybe keep a few
sometimes!

so much great food!

To the university professor. I too teach in a university in and I
have been known to slip off home for a couple of hours when stresses call
for a bit of quilting to calm me down. In fact I think my quilting has
enabled me to carry on in a job which is very pressured.

Martha , that Something for Everyone is very memorable, can't
believe I had to get through 37 of "my life" before hearing that...how
useful it will be!!! Chuckle!!!
I have not seen anyone mention Treadle(?) sewing machines!! Does anyone
use them-I have a New Home in a beautiful wooden table and top & dare say
it would work if it had a belt...It is sure to be Y2K compliant!!! Is
there any of you who use one? I do mean the peddle type...Can't help but
ask since I had never in NY heard of a New Home until KK, although that is
what the cover of mine says & I really bought it because of
appearance...Thanks & glad your V-K was short Sue-I was gone also!! Val

To Velma....Yes I too would rather be "playing with my toys" rather than be
in the office!! Why not keep a small project hidden in a bag under your
desk...or in a drawer? At lunch or break..work on it for a few
minutes....it really "TAKES YOU AWAY"!!! I di it all the time!

Subject: Quilting from work
To Velma ,
I can certainly relate to wanting to go home at lunch and quilt. There
just is not enough time in the day or night when you are in the middle of
a project that keeps calling you. I find that KK makes me feel like I've
done a little quilting every time I read a posting.
I need the help of any quilters out there who know a quilter named Sandy
Boyette of Xenia Ohio. I was involed in a minature paper picing block
exchange 3 years ago and when the project was completed we were to send
her the finished quilt and they were to be photographed for Minature Quilt
Ideas Magazine. That was more than 2 years ago and I have not heard or
seen the quilt since. I would really appreciate any info that anyone may
have on this quilter. (I would really like to get my little quilt back.)

Subject: Removing sticky stuff from labels
I keep a tin of lighter fluid to remove sticky label residue. It works
like a charm. Just remember it's highly inflammable.

Subject: Old Kenmores

To Linda : My old Kenmore doesn't drop its' feed dogs either, but you can buy a darning plate that just snaps on the throat plate and it "covers" the feed dogs. I also do machine quilting on this old machine and it does just fine without the walking foot. Mine is from the late 70's or very early 80's but it was my second Kenmore so it's really my "new one" LOL But, I have a FW and just haven't tried sewing on it yet...don't know why I'm so chicken. Probably for the same reason I haven't updated the software on my computer...I'm a creature of habit!! My van is a 1992 and has 190,000 miles on it...I think I am seeing a pattern :-)

Subject: scrap bag!!!
How do you organize your leftover fabric? I have a big pile of odds and
ends in assorted sizes and shapes, and I'm not sure how to organize this
so that I don't have to paw through every single scrap every time I need
something. Does anyone have any suggestions??? I am really really trying
to get my sewing room (junk room) un-junky for a change.

Subject: Rather Be Quilting than Working

Velma, you're not alone. I too would rather be quilting. My workplace is often stressful and at times, personally demoralizing. I have little control over my work environment even though I'm a manager type in a professional field. Sometimes I have to deal with nasty people, office politics, crazy bosses or suffer the consequences of bad decisions from upper management.
On the other hand, I find quilting to be fun and relaxing. It satisfies my need to be creative and is a process that I have complete control over. I can try new things, mess up and still have a decent outcome in the end. I really enjoy meeting and being with other quilters - they truely are a nice and supportive group of people. I love showing my quilts at my guild's "show and tell" and hearing the oohs, the aahs and the applause. No one at work ever provides such positive reinforcement. It's clear to me why I would rather quilt than be at work!

Subject: Serger
Vicki, I have made 4 baby quilts using a serger. I think it worked great..
The serger finishes the seam nicely and is strong. So far the quilts have
held up nicely - no frayed seams.... The patterns I used were simple ones
that used squares and triangles and half triangles. Nothing that needed a
point to be matched exact.
I didn't use the cutter because the seam allowance is small...
I just tried to make all the seams the same width.
It worked great on flannel.

Hi, I am new to kaffee klatsch. I find the posts fascinating. I am also
fairly new to quilting having started about three years ago. I took lessons
for awhile at adult ed. but gave it up, because the teacher didn't give all
of us the same amount of time. So now I am self taught. I have made lots of
errors but I am learning by each mistake. I love to make baby quilts and am
turning them out really fast. I even tried and was successful at designing
them on my own. I really enjoyed the poems . I tried to get my daughter to
find the one i had written for my grandson and then lo and behold it was on
the page. Wonders never cease. I love to work in bright colors and do
different designs. I am a HS teacher by day and quilt in my spare time. I
have three grandbabies and am making two more quilts for them... the newest
baby has a new quilt. My first quilt was a disaster. You should see the
stitiches. My stitches are still far from perfect but that's okay who cares.

Thanks for the KK return, Sue! It's a forum that I really appreciate
and have learnt much from.
Hey, I want the Featherwight for $150.00!! That's a deal because around
NH I have seen them in stores for as much as $500.000. Saw one at a yard
sale 2 weeks ago for $350.00 but didn't bite.
Vicki: I have done a couple QIAD type quilts, log cabin and an Irish chain
on my serger. Quick and an accurate 1/4" S.A. BUT those seams do not stret
ch when you've got to match up corners by "tweaking" a bit and seams are a pain
to pick out. If you were making something like a table topper w/ no lining
or backing, the serger makes a neat and finished underside w/ no fraying and if you were going to insert a band of patchwork say, at the hem of a skirt,
the serged patchwork would again be neat and finished w/ minimal bulk. That's
the extent of my using a serger w/ quilting. Give it a go!
Erinn: have you tried "Goo be Gone"? some stuff I bought at CVS to remove labels. Works great

Has everyone seen the new Quiltmaker magazine, with the picture of
Doreen Speckman and her whale quilt? How odd that the article must
have gone to print before she died, but what a nice way to be honored.
Hopefully she is looking down and smiling.
I wish I had had a chance to take a class from her, she sounded very
interesting from all the comments made on the KK list.
