Hi Everyone,
I'm afraid that we've received confirmation in the form of both e-mai land phone messages that Doreen Speckmann died in Ireland on Saturday, September 18, 1999 of a msasive heart attack. We've set up a remembrance page on the WWQP for those who wish to share their thoughts & memories. Please visit it at http://quilt.com/Doreen if you wish to add your memories of a funny and talented quilter. We are also waiting for information on a memorial fund being established for Doreen's daughter and will pass any information along as we receive it. I know that while I never met Doreen in person, I have enjoyed her TV appearances and been inspired by her books and will miss her.

This is my first time reading of all the KK
newsletters and learning from all of you experienced quilters. I am looking
forward to each newsletter and hope to be able to contribute back. This past
week I was invoulved in a project for Kosovo and Turkey. We tied 71 quilts
(double size, and twins). This was sponsered by the LDS Church, but was open
to the public. I had a wonderful time. I learned the international stitch ! I
usually do the basic square knot. You can always learn something. Well,
thanks ladies for all of your wonderful ideas and the many projects you have
been involved with. You are all inspiring to me. Thanks !!

Now, I am a stickler for giving credit where its due, so I have to mention
that its not my idea, but comes from an excellent book by Maurine Noble
called 'Machine Quilting Made Easy' published by That Patchwork Place. Is
is one of those inexpensive slim softback books which has wonderful info.
clearly presented, and is my constant companion. I feel guilty for not
saying that in the first place!!

As I understand it, the thing about Big Stitch is that it isn't just the whole ng (running) stitch done larger, but rather the length of the top stitch gets a lot bigger while the length of the underneath stitch only gets a little bigger, i.e. you make a shorter stitch on the back of the quilt than on the top.
Which is the same sort of principle as the Sashiko stitch I think?

The news about Doreen has hit me like a brick. I am profoundly saddened by
the news of her passing.
My 12-year-old son and I were privileged to hear Doreen speak at a quilt
guild meeting in June of 1991. Dave had relunctantly come to the meeting
that morning after I gently verbally twisted his arm to go with me. Having
hoped he might be influenced to develop an appreciation of my love of quilts
and quilting, I was pleased when Doreen's keen sense of humor hit the mark.
Now 20, Dave continues to recognize the value, beyond material costs, of this
art and mom's creative efforts.
The audio tape I made of her lecture has continued to make me laugh out loud
every time I play it. Even those who have never seen the lecture's
accompanying slides have been thoroughly tickled by her tales.
May Doreen rest in peace knowing what a wonderful, positive impact she had
and will continue to have on so many within the quilting community and beyond.

Sadly it is true about Doreen, I was the last person other that her daughter to talk to Doreen late Thursday night before she left for Ireland.
Their first evening was dinner at an Irish resturant and then on to a real
Irish Pub. Doreen's third love behind her daughter and quilting was dancing
and she loved teaching her students to line dance, she got up and walked
to the dance floor and fell over, she was gone. The Lord gave her to us to
love and enjoy and then cut in for a dance Himself. I will miss her everyday of my life but am thankful she did not suffer for one second. What a loss to those how were waiting to meet and hear her.
Doreen and I were close, close friends for more than 20 years.

I received this message last night from my quilt guild confirming
Doreen's death.
Those of you who were saddened by the death of Doreen Speckman on Sat.
Sept 18, 1999, will be happy to learn that Doreen went out in "Doreen"
style. Carol Fallert wrote the following: "She went out singing and
dancing with a crowd of local people with her Birkenstocks on, oh
Doreen, you will be missed." Doreen would have turned 49 in Oct.
Meghan, here 22 year old daughter says: her mother was in an Irish pub
when she suffered the heart attack. Funeral arrangements are pending
until her body is returned to the US> Doreen's new book will be out
(probably at Market) in late Oct. Meghan said her mom's new fabric line
has been "flying off the shelves."

I'm new here but am truly enjoying all the posts. For those of you who have HGTV - Billie Lauder does a wonderful demo on the Big Stitches quilting. If you use your puter and go to http://www.hgtv.com then go under Simply Quilts - you'll find the written program under episode 121. You can also order the video which I believe is about $20.00. I just record all the episodes as I watch it on t.v. but really enjoy the show.
So sorry to hear about Doreen Speckman. She was a true inspiration to me and will be sorely missed.

Linda,
The Trick or Treat Street pattern for Sunbonnet Sue can be found in the
September/October 1999 issue of Quiltmaker magazine. It is really cute.
A project of a local guild is to make quilts and receiving blankets to
distribute to local hospitals. These are combined with newborn sleepers
and given to the new moms who do not have anything to take the new baby
home in. The quilts are often very simple but very much appreciated by
the new moms and hospitals. They expect to use about 90 this year.

I received word from two very reliable sources on 9/20/99 that Doreen
had suffered a heart attack and died while in Ireland on Saturday,
9/18/99 ... an autopsy was being done, but because of the international
implications, her body had not been sent Stateside yet.

Sue, I hope that the rumor turn out to be false. Doreen is also one of my
favorite quilt teachers. She has such a keen sense of humor, and is such a
talented lady. The last time she was to come to Eureka to teach, she
cancelled because of illness and that was several years ago.

So glad to have KK back - it was always my favorite posting(s) to read. Such a shock about Doreen Speckman - but I'd like to go while I was having such a great time & doing what I loved. Since I fell down my patio steps & broke my shoulder in late July, have not been able to do any quilting until the last couple of weeks. My first priority had to be to make a wedding dress for my new DIL - they were married this past weekend - wonderful wedding & so glad it's over. During the early part of the summer we camped in an Amish area in Holmes County, Ohio. Took a class at a quilt shop, bought LOTS of fabrics at every shop I visited (& there were many!) I have a stack & whack using tropical fish fabric finished except for sewing the rows together & putting on the border & have 3 other S & W cut out - they are addictive. I have 2 new grandsons & have to get them quilts made for Xmas so have lots of plans for the

My sincere sympathy to you Susan. When my mom passed away I didn't feel like
doing anything either but eventually I took all her hankies (did they all
collect hankies from their friends?) and have made a lovely quilt from them.
That helped me a lot. Last year I lost my husband and now I am making a crazy
quilt cover for an antique settee from his ties and other velvets & silks.
Also am planning to use some for pillows for each of my 4 girls for Christmas.

It is just great that KK is back in the mailbox! I always liked the
tone of voice from this group.
I have done big stitch quilting on flannel quilts and it turns out
stunning. I use DMC perle and a chenille needle; stitches are about 1/4
to 3/8 long. It goes so FAST!! I made a flannel quilt for a very
elderly male friend (he was 91) a couple of years ago; the flannel was
dark green, navy blue, and red, a lot of different patterns. Big stitch
quilted it in navy DMC and it turned out great. Kept him warm that last
winter of his life; I often thought that if I'd tried to do something
other than the big stitch, I wouldn't have finished it in time.

Here is a hint I find most useful but I have never seen published in any of my sewing hints books. This regards the loose starter thread on spools. Lots of times my thread would work out of that notch and I would have a mess. I started putting a rubber band around my thread (snug, not tight) to catch that thread. It works like a charm. I have not had any threads to work loose and get tangled since I started doing this. Hope this helps somebody with this same problem. KK, welcome back. Cathy

I've been away on vacation at the Maryland shore--Yes, we started during
Dennis and ended with Floyd--life is full of new experiences! I was so
delighted to find KK on my E-mail. I don't do much posting but I truly
enjoy reading everyone's postings. I've not done as much quilting as I
would have liked this summer but did finish two baby quilts and a Celtic
wallhanging as sammple for class I will teach at local quilt shop, which
is now a Bernina dealer. This is wonderful as I had to drive minimum of
l-l/2 hours to closest dealer. As a charity project, I worked with
quilt shop owner to collect log cabin blocks from anyone who wanted to
make a block. We received enough blocks to make a queen size quilt top,
then received 16 more "late" blocks (my own 5 inclued!) after the top
was assembled and basted. The quilt was put on frame in shop and anyone
who wanted could quilt on it. It was donated to local Battered Women's
Shelter for annual auction, along with a second auction item of 16 extra
blocks in beautiful basket with quilting supplies donated by area
quilters. I'm waiting to hear auction results. This project was
conceived in celebration of National Quilting Day. Instead of quilting,
I carry knitting as I travel and also keep basket beside my phone
(equipped with headsets thanks to my sons) and knit child-size afghans
for the shelter to be given to children to keep. When you don't think
you ae accomplishing much, sit down and make a list--you will truly be
surprised at what you have done.

The news that Doreen Speckman has passed away will certainly touch a great many quilters. She was one of my favourite teachers. One of the things that really stayed with me after meeting her was her comment--"Always use your best fabric first because when you die your friends will get it." I always think of her when I am starting to cut into "special" fabrics. We'll miss Doreen.

Subject: hello again and question about England
I'm also glad to see KK back in my mailbox. I've been lazy in the quilting
area because DH put all my stuff in boxes so that we could use my studio for
"temporary" storage of clutter and extra furniture. Do you think he's trying
to tell me to spend a little time on the house? LOL I've been slowly working
on the pile and have found wonderful UFOs of mine that I am now doing in the
living room. HAH! He thinks he can stop ME from quilting. : > I'm working on
a quilt made of hand dyed fabric in a pattern from Kaffe's book that he
called Roman Tiles. He did it all in grey, black and beige, but mine is
multi-color. I had bought hand dyed fat quarters over the years and wanted
to showcase the fabric, not cut it up into little applique shapes. So I'm
making a quilt completely out of my character---precision pieced! Now that
I'm hand quilting it, I'm back to what I like best. Nice, slow hand work.
I have to start a baby quilt soon too as soon as I find what I need in my
boxed up studio. Gee, maybe I should just go to the quilting stores....it's
an emergency, right? The baby is born already. : >
ENGLAND - My question is to Jayne: I'm going to be in England for 10 days in
July. I sing with a symphony orchestra chorus and we are going to perform
with the National Orchestra of Wales. So far I know we'll be in Oxford and
also sing in Albert Hall (did I get the name right?). I don't know how much
shopping time we'll get, but I can't pass up the chance to get some fabric.
I also LOVE the embroidery patterns and books I see in a British magazine I
get and would love to drool over them in person and avoid shipping costs.
You can write to me off the list if you want.
Connie - Tote bags for battered women - At last! A charity project I can do
on my own. I haven't been able to join a guild or bee, and tote bags would
be easy to wrok up quickly. What kind of necessities do you put into them? I
can think of a million things, but can't afford them! :>
Redwork - I've checked out the website and am printing off all the pictures
even as I write. O boy! Another project to clutter up the living room! LOL

quilted basket?
What is a magic tile quilt?
I too would like to know about the log cabin alphabet. I have an adorable 6
mos old granddaughter, and am anticipating many future quilts.
For the tote bags for charity, our guild has made pillowcase style bags out
of pretty chintz fabric because it seems sturdier than cotton. We attach two
lengths of grosgrain ribbon near the top in one of the side seams and use
them to tie the top closed. They can be filled with all kinds of goodies.
The sunbonnet type halloween quilt is in the newest Quiltmaker, adorable!

Hi fellow quilters,
This is in answer to Linda's question for the Sunbonner Sue Halloween
Pattern. It can be found in the Sept./Oct. '99 No.69 Quiltmaker Magazine.
When I read your post, I knew I had just seen it, and looked through my
recent magazines, and found it! it even says Trick or Treat with Sunbonnet
Sue on the cover. It has the pattern, directions, fabric amounts, etc. in the
magazine. It is on page 30 and it is a wall hanging that is 55" X 36". Hope
this will help you find it.

Hi Steph
Your kitchen sounds like lots of fun!! How about doing blocks with different
phases of an apple being eaten, i.e. a whole apple, an apple with a bite or
two taken out and then an apple core. They could be single blocks or sew
them together with sashing in between blocks, back it and bind it with apple
fabric. It would be cute, I think and go along with the theme of the
kitchen.
Another thought might be a quilt with an apple tree and then "apples" that
can be put on the tree as chores are done---if you have little ones around.
Kind of like an advent calendar for the holidays. This might be a little

I, too, am happy to see KK back on line. I used that as my
stress reliever during work.
This summer has been very busy for me. I purchased a new
machine and a 1/4" foot, which has made all the difference in
the world in my machine piecing. I started and finished Jacob's
Ladder approx 45x50 for my grandson's lst birthday and did it
in only 3 weeks! I am so encouraged.
A friend of mine has opened a new quilt store in our small town
of 20,000. I have teamed with another friend to teach
beginning quilting lessons. We both remember how lost we were
with no one to give us the basics, so are providing that
service. It is fun to see the eagerness in our students - they
have NO IDEA of what they are getting themselves into!!!!!
I have several projects in progress: applique blocks for a
full size quilt; Lone Star wallhanging; Sun Bonnet Sue crib
quilt for granddaughter #2; will be taking the shortcut Double
Wedding Ring workshop in a few weeks to do a wall-hanging and
after that will start a Queen size one for DD#1. I love it!
Used to do so much by hand but found that I couldn't work fast
enough. Now do a lot on machine and find that my skills are
getting better from more practice. And that is the name of the
game, practice, practice, practice.

Was I surprised to return from a wonderful 5 days of golf in Phoenix to find a mail box full of KK!!! Welcome back!!!!
Have finished lots of quilts in the last few months but the most fun has been a friends opening a quilt shop 2 mins from home and having the opportunity to teach Stack and Whack at her shop. If you have not tried this method of creating kaleidoscope patterns, you are really missing lots of fun.
DD gave me a wonderful birthday present and paid for a ticket to visit her in London for a week and a chance to see the Great Britain Patchwork Championships. So many WONDERFUL quilts and great venders. I did find one who had French fabrics and wished I have more money to by the Dutch plaids. We can't get them here.

Sue! Edith, I think you are talking about the Trick or Treat Street in the
Quiltmaker September/October 1999 issue. It is on page 30. It looks adorable.
I just finished piecing the Thimbleberries BOM and have just started on
the Thimbleberries Village. I really enjoyed doing the first one, so
I'm looking forward to the village.

Linda,
Synthropol works really well for washing the quilt before it bleeds. It is made to prevent backstaining (which you have). For the next time - you can use synthropol for that first washing of a quilt with unwashed fabric.
I had a quilt that I made with my own hand dyed fabric. I washed the hand dyed 3 times before using it with synthropol and it still bled. It bled more onto the white background Hoffman prints than anything else. My lesson there was to use the Hoffman white for dyeing! I switched to the Hoffman because it takes the dye so well! A great find. I still, however, have a pink quilt. The only solution I have found to bleeding is to try and catch it before the fabric dries. I recommend just flushing it with water until the bleeding stops. Unfortunately it does not work all the time. And there is no good solution for taking the backstaining out once it has dried in. Bleach will probably help the backstaining but ruin the other fabrics. (I have tried that one out as well.)
Is it an all over dye, or just stained in spots. If it is stained in spots you might try appliqu=E9ing something over the top of the stains?
Really sorry to hear about Doreen - took a class with her once. She was quite a joy to be around.

I think you should just go to a bunch of dealers with a layered piece of your fabric and some triangles to sew together and try them out for both piecing and quilting. Each machine has its benefits, and you will need to find the one that feels right to you. I bought a new Viking several years ago to discover that it's special machine embroidery features required that the feed dogs be farther apart than on my old machine. 1/4" seams are next to impossible with the new machine, making piecing really difficult. I use it for machine embroidery, but not much else. I still use my old Viking for piecing.
That is my other recommendation when you are buying a new machine. If you can, don't trade in your old one. If it is in really bad condition, chances are you won't get enough money out of it to make it worth your while. If it is in good condition, a second backup machine for when the first one is in the shop for a tune-up is a great advantage.
Viking and Bernina are my favorites for quilting, Elnas for embroidery. Pfaff was bought out by Singer a few years back and it's quality went down fast. Don't know anything about the large quilting machines. I am a hand quilter at heart.
