Sue,
It's great to have kaffee-klatch in the mailbox again. I always enjoy
reading about what everyone is making. This past spring we sold our home
and moved into a retirement center, just five miles from where we lived.
All the work involved caused me to be away from quilting projects until a
couple of months ago. I had finished a crazy quilt vest for myself, made
from neckties, early this year and didn't get to work on anything else until
a few weeks ago. Current projects include my first flannel quilt and a
pillow top (pansy applique=B4).

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for information on how to subscribe to Quiltmaker Magazine. I received 8 responses, and was overwhelmed with your kindnesses. I'm back into quilting now, and busy with two projects going at once. With the "KK" postings to make my morning, and the magazine to fill my head with ideas, all I need now are the $$ to buy everything with and 99 years to do it in!! Subject: Thanks for coming back!!!
Thank you Sue!!! Like some of the rest I thought I had been
unsubscribed to this and looked all over the web to find it again!! I
am a rather new quilter who has more ideas than talent!!! I did finish
one wall signature quilt last week..have been collecting fabric over the
summer...and of course more books.....finished another wall quilt from
fabric I bought while in New England last fall.....;=)) Also finished
one quilt my grandmother made many yrs ago...a top.... last yr. my
quilting lessons came from this list!!.....so please everyone keep
posting!! Up until I came across this list I was a self taught
quilter!!.... All my questions will start appearing soon!!

Hi Vicki,
Congratulations!! There's a free pattern for a three-block angel
wallhanging that could be a start for you, at

among many other great projects. Look for it about half-way down the
list, added on 11/10/97... Mini Angel Quilt. The design could easily be
expanded by doing more blocks and adding sashing, maybe doing angels in
different colours, to make your angel crib quilt. Or it might just
inspire some other ideas. Hope this is helpful! Again, congratulations
to both you and your daughter, you will all really enjoy your 'little
angel' when she arrives!!!!

On machine quilting - I had similar 'loopy back' problems when I changed to a new machine which had auto tension control. After experiment I discovered I needed to over-ride the 'auto' and whack the top tension up almost to max. to get the balance right. Try doing a test piece - mark out lines at one inch intervals on a wadding sandwich and then stitch across them and up the tension one increment each time you pass a line. You should then be able to see at what stage the balance is right. Also, getting a 'single hole' needle plate I am told should help, although I have now managed without.
On Angels - there is a Debbie Mumm wallhanging pattern (just published as a single paper pattern) which is all applique angels in different shapes and sizes, and also a book called 'Red Wagon Originals' by Gerry Kimmel and Linda Brannock published by That Patchwork Place which has some nice flying angels.

Subject: holes in fabric

I just washed a pillowcase I made 8 years ago. It's been on my sofa and gets
heavy use, BUT, I had used on VIP print with gold, and where the gold spots
were, I have HOLES now. I guess I will be VERY careful about not using any
gold prints in any of my quilts. Anyone else with this experience?

Welcome back. Was I surprised to find the digest in my mailbox. Haven't
gotten much done as far as quilting goes. Took a wonderful trip this
summer to Australia and New Zealand. Had some sadness too, my Mother died
while we were on our trip and two very dear friends were very ill,both are
doing well now so I can see a light at the end of the tunnel.
I belong to two guilds and we make quilts for abused and hurting children.
Both guilds usually will do a program where we do a mystery quilt and these
are made with the purpose of donating them.

I too made a quilt for Kosovo. While we were in Australia we stayed with
the quilter who was instrumental in getting so many quilts made for the
Kosovo refuges that came to Australia.

Subject: Glad KK's back!
I'm so excited that KK is back! I didn't realize how much I missed this.
I've been working on a couple of quilts this summer. I finally finished
the little Big Stitch quilts for my cousin's twins (a BIG hit!) this
spring, although not in time for their 4th birthday. This summer I
rushed to piece a baby quilt for another friend and sent it off to KS to
be machine quilted, since I still can't get that down. It turned out
great and has been sitting in my dining room since July, waiting to be
finished ... my mom has cancer again and so I've been pretty busy taking
care of her. BUT while she was in the hospital, I started applique-ing
hearts for a double Irish Chain with hearts in the "blank" squares ...a
kit from Hearthside Quilts. I have lots of appliqueing to do but
eventually! I will get it done. This will be a gift for my best friend
and her husband.
I thought I hadn't been doing much quilting, but now that I read this
back, I guess I'm not as much of a slacker as I'd thought! Now if I can
just find time to piece another baby quilt for another friend's little
one, due in October ...

It's was great to see this list on my email the other
day, I belong to others but this one is my
favorite..great going and happy to be reading all the
information and fun again...have had a busy summer
with little time to quilt, but hopefully motivation

for the year...with several quilt til you wilts

Subject: Kaffee-Klatsch Sept 18, 1999
Welcome back KK!! We're all very happy. My charity work is blankets for
"Project Linus". I had my high school geometry students make some
tessellation quilts and some of you donated some beautiful blocks for some
"scrap" quilts. I've always machine quilted my quilts and can you believe
I've never "tied" a quilt by myself in my life? I'd like to start so I can
make some simplier quilts for Project Linus so I can get more made. My
question is....my husband is a very good carpenter and I'm sure he could make
me a quilt stand to tie quilts on. Does anyone have a pattern to follow or
instructions I could pass onto him? Thanks!
