Hurray!!! So glad you're back, up and running. Looking forward to new
ideas. I'm in the process of making lavender/buckwheat pillows for gifts.
I saw these in an upscale boutique for $120 for a pillow about 12" across.
Should be easy enough to make for under $15. They are heart shaped, made
from crushed velvet and then covered with silk flowers on one side. The
flowers are hot glued to the top very close together so it looks like a
bouquet on your bed. One was done in sterling roses (the gray/lavender
ones) and another with done in yellow and orange black-eyes susans. Both
were stunning. Though this isn't quilted, it certainly could be adapted
for quilting. Maybe a crazy quilt done in silk and velvet? Or from old
neckties? Possibilities seems endless. I found dried lavender for $.70/oz
at a local bridal supply store. It's also available through the Martha
Stewart website. And buckwheat is available at natural food and health
food stores in bulk.

Boy have I missed this group. Well, here's my question, for anyone who has
anything to say about it. I have a 1200-square watercolor quilt over my
couch that gets direct sun in the morning. I am worried about fading. I
found a spray product called Quiltgard that is supposed to have UV
protection. It also says to test a small portion of the fabric
first....well that's impossible for this quilt. Has anyone ever used this
product with good, ok, or bad results? I'd like to know before I try
anything.

the children who move into the county's battered women's shelter with their
mothers. A local church made a generous monetary donation to purchase the
supplies needed for this ongoing project and we include the church's name
and the name of the guild on the labels we attach.

Yes!!!! What a great surprise to find Kaffee-Klatsch in my mailbox! As for charity projects, my guild makes small children's nap quilts every summer to donate to our local women's shelter. Each of the small children is given a quilt when they come into the shelter and can take it with them when they leave (as long as the quilts last!).So much fun to do them, thinking how they will make an upset little one feel better! This list is just in time to help me with a problem--in the retirement community where I live we are holding an Arts & Crafts Exhibit for a wk. beginning 10-31-99. We have the use of two rooms to set up, and I really need some display ideas for the quilts. We do have pegboard walls in our little gallery so can put a few there, but have no hanging racks. The pegboard walls will also be used to display photography, needlework, etc.The other room has plain walls and we cannot put in nails. There are two large billiards tables in it which will have a flat piece of plywood on top. We have about 2600 residents so potentially could have a lot of items submitted for display (each resident limited to 3 items, and of course many will not display anything. Will know a wk. ahead how much we have so we can plan--display ideas????? Help! Connie in (where its still summer)

Welcome back everyone!
My 11yo DD's best friend moved to Florida the day after school got out. Her
mom and I were really close too - they lived around the corner from us.
Last spring, I asked the mom for some of Shaena's T-shirts, told her not to
ask questions. I enlisted the help of my DD and two of her friends (one
who's mom's a quilter, the other who helped my teach a sewing class last
summer for kids) to make a good-bye quilt for Shaena.
The girls picked the colors (purple, blues and greens) and did most of the
rotary cutting (they were all experienced). I supplied about 30 FQ's and we
used the Marti Mitchell templates for 4 in blocks. They would pick out
color combos, cut the blocks and put them in the pages of magazine. They
got bored with the sewing so I ended up doing most of it. We had dozens of
wild colored pieced blocks, T-shirt logos (soccer, basketball and softball
teams she played on) and several photo transfers ( I made these into log
cabins).
We put everything on a flannel board and rearranged a few times. I machine
quilted a loopy-loop design (how's that for technicality?). It ended up
being about 60 x 72.
At the going away party, all the kids (boys and girls) wrote messages on a
muslin label and I managed to get it sewn on before the end of the party. I
wrote "Whenever you miss your friends in Bay, just wrap this around you and
everyone will be giving you a big hug". Needless to say, her mother was
sobbing. Reports have it that she spent a good part of the summer (in
Florida) with this quilt and is now using it with the hurricane approaching.
Also, for the record, I finished quilting an antique Double Nine Patch on
9-9-99 !! Gotta get that label made.

Subject: well, hello
Well, hello to everyone, especially you, Sue. Thanks for getting back in
harness again. I"ve missed KK. Others aren't quilte the same.
Many changes for me. I sold my city house, moved to my mini-farm, aquired a
few ducks & chickens, and am squeezed into an old mobile home while
(hopefully), the new house will go up this winter.
Finished two hexagon I spy quilts for granddaughter & a friend's new baby.
Now doing my first log cabin using flannelette.
Has anyone out there done a 'Big Stitch', at least that's what I think it's
called? I love handquilting, trying to get that unattainable 8-10 stitches
an inch. This one needs to go quicker, yet I don't want to machine quilt
it. I'd love some responses about what others have done.

Subject: This summer's activities
I've been very busy this summer with a new job, and just got married
to a wonderful man who's proving to be the perfect father for my
children, in addition to being the perfect husband!
I've just started a basic pillow-top (a set of two) for my new
sister-in-law, who loves gingerbread people and bassett hounds. I'm
doing an exaggerated 9-patch because the gingerbread fabric I found
is quite large. It's going to look very personal and special when I
get done. I hope she appreciates it as much as I will be putting
into it!
Other than that, just doing some basic sewing, not as much quilting
as I'd like. Not enough room now with a new person in the house all
the time!

Hi, Sue and everyone,
Best news I've had all day, Sue. I'm so glad you're well enough to
"take up the reins" and operate this list again. I really missed the
interaction and comments from everyone.
My only pro bono quilts so far are preemie quilts which my guilds donate
to the local special care nursery and the BC Children's Hospital. My
summer resolution is to make one every month.....we'll see! However, if
anyone is looking for an easy quilt (any size) to make, I recently found
one (with the pattern) at this URL:

The block is called "Homeward Bound" and was originally designed in 1997
as a quick quilt for flood victims in North Dakota and Manitoba. I
haven't made it up myself yet, but plan to. The blocks are simple and
make up into an interesting pattern.
As usual, I have a number of (new) projects on the go: a tessellated
cats wall hanging in black and white prints, a quick-pieced Christmas
wreath (from a class in August), and a "Christmas Chain" wall-hanging
which show-cases your prettiest Christmas print (the pattern is in
"Quilt It for Christmas" by Quilter's Newsletter Magazine) - my first
"on point" setting. There are also the many tops from previous courses
which aren't "quite" finished yet! But.....last spring I FINISHED a
"Bugs in a Bottle" quilt for my five-year-old grandson. It was a big
success (if I do say so myself) and he certainly loves it, which is the
important part! Someone told me recently "finished is better than
perfect" - so I'm trying to remember that.
Last month for my birthday I received Jinny Beyer's newest book
"Designing Tessellations" (published by Contemporary Books) - it's
great! Have also recently read "Class-Act Quilts" (That Patchwork
Place), "Quilting Your Memories by Sandy Bonsib (That Patchwork Place)
and "Art and Inspiration" - Ruth B. McDowell (C&T Publishing)...this is
what happens when Chapters Book Store opens nearby!

Subject: Welcome back!!
Welcome back Sue and all of the rest of the k-k'ers. Hope all is well with
you and yours. Our guild is making cuddle quilts (38 x 40ish) to be put in
police cars. They in turn will be giving them to young children coming out
of domestic violence and such to help them through a very traumatic time.
Yes, the kids get to keep the quilts. Everyone keeps asking me that one. We
have had alot of fun making the bright and happy quilts and the size makes
them super speedy. Can't wait to see what everyone else is up to.

Ohhhhhh, what a welcome email! Kaffee Klatsch is back! ! ! ! Sue, for all
the work you have done in the past you deserved the time off. However, I
missed everyone!
I've been doing lots of quilting (was invited to a juried art market) and
have several wall hangings and baby quilts ready to go.
I'm also looking at the Bernina Serger 1000DA. Anyone have it???? Like
it????? It sure is hard for me to make decisions.
I've made baby quilts for donations to local hospitals etc. It's called ABC
quilts and is part of a national organization. It's kind of fun making
something that doesn't have to "go with something else."

Hi Sue, good to see you're back.
My suggestion for items to donate is small cuddle quilts for women and
child shelters. It means that the child has something to call its own,
after probably leaving all its possessions behind and can take it with them
when the family moves on out of the shelter.

Hi Sue and everyone,
Glad to see this start up again. For charity, I often purchase "cheater
cloth" to practice machine quilting. It then makes up into a quick lap quilt
to donate to a conval. home in my neighborhood. They love them and I don't
mind giving them away.
One quick tip, I have recently begun using a neat little tool. It's a small
disc with a hole in the center that is a 1/4" marking tool. When I put my
marking pencil in the hole, I can use it to quickly mark a 1/4" line around
applique shapes for quilting. I love the ease and speed.

Thank you for coming back. I Praise and Thank the Lord for you. I
missed the mailings so much. I'm so excited that I am writing to you before
I answer my pregnant daughter-in-law's letter. Now does that tell you
something? :-)
I'm sewing a "Jacks" baby quilt. Familiar with it? The edge has folded
triangles with a regular straight boarder under them. I hope I'm making this
clear. I wonder if the triangle edge would be uncomfortable on a baby quilt
if I wouldn't put the straight edge under them. Also, I just recently bought
a Bernina 150 quilter's addition. Love it. I am debating if I should
machine quilt this baby quilt . Any comments from your readers would be
appreciated.

I am at it again. I recycle those shirts that are looking natty. The
fronts of shirts are the part that get the blooches and seem to look
worn the fastest. So I just replace the front. Well to be honest some
times I just cover up what is there. Depending on where the garment
will be worn. If outdoor, then just cover the existing front. In doors
replace it. I love to do quilting on shirts, regular fabric shirts,
tee shirts and of course sweat shirts. The recycle method keeps the
cost of new items down. No one knows what was there before. So wear it
with pride. And hear the ooo's and aaaa's. I made several for the
family in our favorite sport, THE PACKERS. They have such neat fabrics
related to the different teams. I did strip quilting with a bargello
pattern. Have had requests to make more for others, but alas, the
family keeps me busy enough.

Sure am glad to have kaffee-klatsch back. It's okay that you needed a break.
I think all of us can relate to that.
I wanted to share a quick project that I did yesterday. The October BH&G
American Patchwork and Quilting has a wallhanging and tablerunner design
called Wildflower Meadow. When I saw it I knew I had to make the wallhanging
for my mother for x-mas. She's one of those people that has a beautifully
landscaped yard and has even added a pond and has wonderful plants growing
around it. I bought the fabrics last week and had everything cut out.
Started the sewing yesterday morning and was finished by early evening. It's
probably the quickest I've ever finished a project but I think it was
because it got prettier and prettier as I went! Anyway, it's ready to
sandwich and start quilting.
I've also got another lap quilt ready to mark, sandwich and quilt. It's a
southwester design and will be for my stepdaughter for x-mas. Guess you
could say right now I have x-mas on the brain! It's not the far off. What
are the rest of you working on??
Again, I'm glad to have this list back. Hope to be getting more great ideas
from you all.

I got a new Bernina sewing machine recently and it sews like a dream. Now I am
trying to machine quilt all my UFO tops on it. I finished a Pioneer Braid quilt
last week, and should be working on my Y2K quilt instead of sitting on this
computer!

Subject: Glad You're Back!!
Glad you're back. I had begun to wonder if I had unsubscribed.
Busy this summer. Trying some creative quilting and piecing now that I am
retired. Enjoyed the grandchildren during the summer as well. Now am
working on a couple of quilts for our local guild's quilt show coming in
October. A T-shirt quilt made with shirts from the local Catholic high
school that has an auction every fall to raise money for tuition help. The
other one is from my big sister (she's actually only 5 feet tall), who put me
thru nursing school 40 years ago and has never let me repay her. Boy, will
she be surprised. VBG

Subject: quilting in garments, it's about time
Hi! So happy to see this in my in box, I haven't seen a KK posting in
my mail for at least 10 months, and suddenly it's back.
Well, finally I am starting on some garment sewing. Have been watching
people in quilting for a long time making vests and jackets, etc. and
now I have purchased my first japanese fabric (salmon color) and am
quilting the front bodice part and will do some beading too. I also
have fixings for some jumper style easy a-line dresses and a velvety
vest from fabric from Rainbow resources at the Marin quilt show. She
had irredescent dyed velvet, yummy!
Don't get me wrong, I've sewed clothes since I was twelve but have been
tied up in quilt project that didn't cover clothing. Can't wait,
there's an easy bargello sweatshirt jacket and some quilt block jumper
patterns that just use one quilt block in the front. Can't wait. Also
am taking a John Flynn double wedding ring quilt (ufo in progress) to
quilting tonight. That method really makes it a can-do type of quilt.
