 Double Pyramid

Fabric

The Double Pyramid Block uses two different fabrics.

 one focus fabric

 One background fabric

Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

three 6-1/2" squares of background fabric
three 6-7/8" squares of background fabric
thirty 2-3/8" squares of focus fabric
eighteen 2-3/8" squares of background fabric

 Piecing the Block

 1) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the eighteen 2-3/8" background fabric squares as shown.
 2) Place one of the marked background fabric squares and one of the 2-3/8" focus fabric squares, right sides together, with the background fabric square on top as shown. Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the remaining background fabric squares and seventeen more of the focus fabric squares.
 3) Cut each of the squares sewn in Step 2 apart on the marked diagonal line. Press seam allowances toward the focus fabric. There should now be thirty-six half-square triangle units measuring 2" square.
 4) Cut the twelve remaining 2-3/8" squares in half on the diagonal as shown to create twenty-four focus fabric right triangles.
 5) Take three of the half-square triangle units completed in Step 3 and piece together as shown. Repeat with fifteen more Step 3 units for a total six pieced units. Press seam allowances toward the focus fabric. The completed units should measure 2" x 5".

6) Take one of the focus fabric triangles cut in Step 4 and piece to one of the units completed in Step 5 as shown. Repeat with five more triangles and the remaining Step 5 units. Press the seam allowances toward the focus fabric triangle.

Note: When piecing the right square triangles, always start sewing on the straight side of the triangle as indicted by the red arrow.

 7) Take two of the half-square triangle units from Step 3 and piece together as shown. Repeat with ten more Step 3 units for a total of six pieced units. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric triangles. These completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 8) Take one of the focus fabric right triangles cut in Step 4 and piece together with one of the units completed in Step 7 as shown. Repeat with five more right triangles and the remaining Step 7 units. Press the seam allowance toward the Step 7 units.
 9) Take one of the half-square triangles units from Step 3 and one of the right triangles cut in Step 5 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 3 half-square triangles and five more right triangles. Press the seam allowances toward the right triangles.
 10) Take one of the remaining focus fabric right triangles and piece to the unit completed in Step 9 as shown. Repeat with the remaining right triangles and the remaining Step 9 units. Press the seam allowances toward the right triangles.
 11) Take one of the units completed in Step 6 and one of the units completed in Step 8 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 6 and Step 8 units. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 8 unit.
 12) Take one of the units completed in Step 10 and one of the units completed in Step 10 and piece together as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 10 unit.
 13) Take the three 6-7/8" background fabric squares and cut in half on the diagonal as shown to create six right triangles.
 14) Take on of the units completed in Step 12 and one of the right triangles cut in step 13 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 12 units and Step 13 triangles. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric triangles. The completed squares should measure 6-1/2".
 15) Take one of the 6-1/2" squares of background fabric and two of the units completed in Step 14 and piece together as shown to create the middle row of the quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric square. The completed row should measure 6-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 16) Take one of the 6-1/2" squares of background fabric and two of the units completed in Step 14 and piece together as shown to create the top row of the quilt Block. Repeat with the remaining 6-1/2" square of background fabric and the two remaining Step 14 units to completed the bottom row of the quilt Block. Press the seam allowances away from the center square toward the ends of the rows. The completed rows should measure 6-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 17) Piece together the row completed in Step 15 and the two rows completed in Step 16 to completed the Double Pyramid quilt Block. Press the seam allowances away from the center of the Block.
