March 1999 - 6" Block

 Treasure Box

Fabric

The Treasure Box Block uses three different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 Fabric - B

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 four 2-1/2" squares of fabric A
 eight 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles of background fabric
 sixteen 1-1/2" squares of background fabric
 twenty 1-1/2" squares of fabric B


 Piecing the Block

 1) On the wrong side of the sixteen of the twenty 1-1/2" squares of fabric B, lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 2) Place one of the marked 1-1/2" squares of fabric B, right sides together, with one of the 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles of background fabric with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the seven remaining 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" background fabric rectangles and seven more of the marked 1-1/2" squares of fabric B.
 3) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B.
 4) Place one of the remaining marked 1-1/2" squares of fabric B, right sides together, with one of the units completed in Step 13 with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the seven remaining units from Step 3 and seven more of the marked 1-1/2" squares of fabric B.
 5) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B. The completed units should measure 1-1/2" x 2-1/2".
 6) Take two of the units completed in Step 5 and piece together as shown. repeat with the remaining six Step 5 units. Press the seam allowances toward the left. The four completed units should meausre 1-1/2" x 4-1/2".
 7) On the wrong side of the sixteen 1-1/2" squares of background fabric, lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 8) Place one of the marked 1-1/2" squares of background fabric right sides together, with one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric A with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with three remaining 2-1/2" squares of fabric A and three more of the marked 1-1/2" squares of background fabric.
 9) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
 10) Take one of units completed in Step 9 and one of the marked 1-1/2" background fabric squares and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 9 units and three more of the 1-1/2" marked background fabric squares.
 11) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
 12) Take one of units completed in Step 11 and one of the marked 1-1/2" background fabric squares and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 11 units and three more of the 1-1/2" marked background fabric squares.
 13) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
 14) Take one of units completed in Step 13 and one of the marked 1-1/2" background fabric squares and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 13 units and the three remaining 1-1/2" marked background fabric squares.
15) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric. The completed units should measure 2-1/2" square.
 16) Take the four square units completed in Step 15 and piece together as shown, pressing seam allowances to the right. The completed Block center unit should measure 4-1/2".
 17) Take the unit completed in Step 16 and two of the units completed in Step 6 and piece together as shown to completed the middle row of the Treasure Box quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the center unit. This completed row should measure 4-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 18) Take one of the units completed in Step 6 and two of the 1-1/2" square of fabric B piece together as shown to make the top row of the quilt Block. Repeat with the remaining Step 6 unit and two 1-1/2" fabric B squares to completed teh bottom row of the Block. Press seam allowances toward the fabric B squares. The completed rows should measure 1-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 19) Take the middle row completed in Step 17 and the two rows completed in Step 18 and piece together as shown to completed the Treasure Box quilt Block. Press seam allowance away from the center row. The completed quilt Block should measure 6-1/2" square which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all four sides.
