sixteen 2-1/2" squares of background fabric

one 2-1/2" strip of background fabric at least 20" long

 Piecing the Block

 1) Place the 2-1/2" strip of Fabric A together with the 2-1/2" strip of background fabric, right side together. Sew the long edges of the strips together using a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam toward the Fabric A strip.
 2) With rotary cutter, straighten one of the short edges of the two joined strips. Next, cut four 4-1/2" squares from the pieced strips as shown.
 3) Lightly mark a line on the diagonal of the wrong side of the sixteen 2-1/2" squares of the background fabric.
 4) Place one of the 2-1/2" background fabric squares on top of one of the 4-1/2" fabric A squares, right sides together, with the marked diagonal line as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with three more squares of 4-1/2" fabric A and three more 2-1/2" background fabric squares.

 8) Taking the units created in Step 7, place one of the 2-1/2" background fabric squares, right sides together, and marked diagonal line positioned as shown on top of the unit. Sew on the marked line. Repeat with the three remaining units from Step 7.

9) Trim the fabric 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam toward the background fabric.
 10) Taking the units created in Step 9, place one of the 2-1/2" background fabric squares, right sides together, and marked diagonal line positioned as shown on top of the unit. Sew on the marked line. Repeat with the three remaining units from Step 9.

11) Trim the fabric 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam toward the background fabric. The completed units should measure 4-1/2" square.
 12) Take two of the units completed in Step 11 and one of the units completed in Step 2 and piece together as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 2 unit. Repeat with the two remaining Step 11 units and one more of the Step 2 units. This completes the top and the bottom rows of the Rolling Stone quilt Block. Each row should measure 4-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 13) Take the two remaining Step 2 units and the remaining 4-1/2" square of Fabric A and piece together as shown to create the middle row of the quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 2 units. The completed row should measure 4-1/2" x 12-1/2".
