Subject: Thread from Cotton Club

I remember someone saying they really liked using the thread from
the Cotton Club - that it worked well in their Bernina. I see a
description for thread ($8.00/spool) that says:

  Fine Thread
3400 yds of #140 glazed 2 ply cotton thread on a small wood
cone. When Machine piecing, it eliminates the bulk usually
caused by having two threads. Its light weight makes it invisible
for applique, so thread matching becomes less of an issue.
For machine quilting, it works well on the top and in the bobbin,
or combined with nylon on the top. Available in 7 colors by the
spool or buy the introductory assortment of 1 spool each color
and save $1.00 per spool. (The Pastel color is a cinnamon shade)

Is this the thread? Have you had success with it in your Bernina?
I'd like to use it for piecing quilts - is it strong enough?

I've always used Mettler thread and I've been happy with it, but
the finer weight of this has me interested.

Thanks,

I've used that thread for years. I usually piece with my Yuki-TL98, but
I've also used it in my 1230. Wonderful stuff--put it in the bobbin and
you can sew forever.

Subject: oil cloth &/or flannel backed vinyl

Hi friends, I am getting ready to purchase 18 yards of one - oil cloth or
flannel backed vinyl for 8 ft. tables in a Masonic lodge. The flannel
backed vinyl in JoAnns seemed to be very thin. Where is the best place and
least expensive to acquire these fabrics?

Subject: Amazing Box update

Been playing a lot lately. Very easy to use. Unfortunitely I purchased the
Brother's Disney card - no luck. It will not read. The store where I bought
the box from, tried it on several machines & converter boxes for me. I was
afraid that I had a faulty Amazing Box. But Disney has put a extra tough
block on this card. Even other Brother machines have trouble reading it if
not for that exact model. Has anyone else found this out the hard way. Can
you get around the block on the card? I paid $50+ for the card and can't use
it. The store won't take it back after you open it. Guess I'll have to sell
it to someone with a Brother machine.

One other ?- The Amazing Box said it was Artista compatible & it is,
but.....I don't think it will read the art format off of the computer. Say
I've downloaded a design already in the art format, it won't show at all.
I've checked the settings there is no obvious selection for that format,
only others. Now a pes format design I can get no problem. They
automatically convert into art format when going to the blank card. So I'm
thinking now that I will just have to download design in the pes format.
Anyone else encounter this?

I have the Magic Box. You will need a software like Simon Sizing or
something that can read art format to open and view the art designs on your
computer screen. However, if you want to download designs in pes or hus and
then write them to your art card that is a simple solution. You simply can
not open and view designs without some software that supports art. Some
softwares do not currently support V3, so you may be disappointed anyway if
your downloaded design was created in V3. Just try and determine what
software the design was created in and download that format. You don't want
to keep converting multiple times if possible. Something is lost or changed
each time and it is not for the good.

Donna

This is true. It's too bad that the person you bought the box from didn't
double check his information about Art. compatibility. The booklet with the
box states it does not read the Art format from the computer. You will be
able to read from Artista Cards, but not from the computer..Artista
owners have their software and so this isn't a problem for them. The
Magician Sizing program is a cool little program by OESD that converts and
resizes the Art designs so you can download them into the box and comes with
a catalog , you can order them free online from OESD. Their hyperlink is

Subject: Activa 130 Question

I just got this machine (dealer selling classroom machines). So far I
really do like it. It's the first computerized machine I've used, and I
love sewing along at 90 m.p.h. and having it stop sewing as soon as I let up
on the pedal.

Anyway, the only problem I have is that if I don't have the threads held
snugly in the thread cutter (or hang onto them with my fingers) when I start
sewing, I end up with a little thread barf on the back of whatever I'm
sewing, and forget about not bringing up the bobbin thread before starting
to sew, the first few stitches are totally unacceptable. Am I doing
something wrong, or do I need to take it in for a minor adjustment? It
really isn't a huge problem. I've always hung onto the loose threads when I
start a seam (or use a scrap of fabric as a thread bunny), so it isn't
something new I have to teach myself. I was just hoping a newer machine
wouldn't have the same issue.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe. I'm thinking you may need an adjustment. My machine does fine if i
don't bring up the thread tails and you shouldn't have to hold them either. I
do, however, have a straight-stitch plate. i wonder if that would help this
problem for you? I have a newer activa but they're so much the same that i
think yours will do as well once it is adjusted.

Dear Joe, My 160 does the same thing, always has. I was taught to hold the
threads, pull them out a little longer (waste of thread) or have them secured
in the thread holder. That's just the way the machine seems to work. I use
thread bunnies, because they reduce the amount of loose thread clippings to
deal with. My New Years resolution was to keep a tidier sewing space and the
thread bunnies really help. Also placed a heavy ceramic wine bottle chiller
on the sewing table to catch the various loose threads and other trimmings.
Love my Bernina. Janet in sunny, hot Fort Worth
