Deb, I LOVE it. Do you have a specific use for each machine, or just sew
randomly to use them all? I have the 830 and Janome 4800 and New Home
Treadle. I had a Featherweight, but sold that. I love the dependability of
my 830. I went back to taking that to classes and quilting days, as it
always works just right for me.----Marilyn------

like...have been considering one but of course would never give up my

I know that this has probably been discussed on this ring before, but until
you actually have the problem yourself, you don't pay that close
attention!!!! I have the Artista 180E and just purchased a new Gateway
laptop that has Windows XP on it. I am having MAJOR problems getting the
Editor and CPS software to work. I keep getting the messages Serial Port is
Engaged and Communication Error: please check com port setting and cable if
problem persists. I bought an adapter at Radio Shack to get the connecting
cable to go onto the Dongle which is in the only port on the back of the
computer that will accept it. (Clear as mud???) Can anyone shed any light

Hancey,

I do a lot of applique and use the magnifying attachment. It has 3 lenses
in different strengths. I sometimes use a stronger pair of eye glasses,
also. I am very happy with the attachment.

Wow, Thank you Lorna, I have the new light and now I can take my machine in
with me when I pick up the bracket!

Can you sew without the lenses also and the bracket doesn't get in the way
does it?

I'm excited to get it now with all this new information!!

Did you go to the Bernina site and download and install the XP patch? That
could be your problem, or something is using the same port.

the digest!! I can't wait to try it!! I was given a demo so I already know
how to use it.

Now, what foot do I need to sew on shank-type buttons? What other feet must
I have that I have been unaware of!!?? :-)

Perhaps one of you very knowledgeable fellow sewers can tell me what's
happening with my machine.
Ever since I bought the 180 in Oct. of 2000, I could feel a tingling
sensation, like a slight electrical short, when I ran my fingertips lightly
over the metal part of the sewing surface and on the knee lift. I didn't
realize that it wasn't supposed to do that, so ignored it for a long time,
then all this stuff has gone wrong with the machine I am wondering if that is
why.
First it developed a vertical and horizontal cross on the viewing screen,
which didn't interfere with use, but was just always there. The dealer
replaced a part and that fixed it. Then the low bobbin thread warning beeper
went out. Then the automatic buttonholer. It has been repaired and is ready
for pickup at the dealers, but here is my primary problem. My dealer, who has
been wonderful, has checked all the wiring inside and can find no short. Here
is where I feel like I'm entering the Twilight Zone - my dealer cannot even
feel the tingling sensation. I can feel it on the 180, but on my 1630 there
is no tingling sensation at all, so I know it is just the 180 that has this.
I've written the Bernina people, but so far they have not gotten back to me.
Has anyone else heard of this? What do I do next?

Michelle you're just like me! I will be buying #18 based on the feedback here
also. My Pfaff does have a foot for that, but i like the way the bernina does
the buttonhole better. I nearly always get a loopy on my Pfaff and the
bernina ties off better. I have been doing it ok using no foot at all on my
bernina. Someone mentioned a cording foot! Now THERE'S one that has some
possiblities! And another mentioned a special zipper foot she uses for making
piping! I'd love an easy way to make that piping! Zipper feet don't USUALLY
work great for me but this one may be different. Do you have a pintuck foot?
You need one if you don't. ;-)

Not on a Bernina but it is a common occurrence on vintage sewing
machines with old wiring. Certainly shouldn't be happening on a new
machine. The first time I discovered my childhood featherweight doing
it, I was at a friend's house. She has Mexican tile floors on concrete
slab. It was summer. I had kicked off my sandals so I was grounding
it. At home on carpet it wasn't noticeable but I told my DH about it
and he immediately put the volt meter on it. Yep, direct short. He
always pays attention when I tell him I am getting a "tingle" even if he
can't feel it.

Keep after your dealer to find it or replace it.

I think we are "extra-special" people Dianne ;o} I have felt this also. I
have the 180 but, I feel this on other machines and occasionally some
appliances also. It is just a slight tingling sensation, nothing that would
make you jerk back or anything such as that. It is just "there". Maybe we
are just sensitive to this?

When I sew on my buttons I would like to share how I finish them. I always
keep a bottle of "Fray Check" beside my machine, and after cutting the
threads I dab fray check on the threads to seal them to each other. I
*never* have to sew on a button that comes off again, because the fabric
will likely disintegrate before the button falls off.
Also I use the #18 foot to sew on hooks and eyes, and snaps. Also you can
adjust the little tongue for a shank to allow for thick fabric.

Vera,

I purchased a new laptop (Dell) in February, also came with Windows XP.

You need to upgrade the CPS software (I believe it's version 4.0) - this
version is compatible with XP. Your dealer will be able to get the new
version for you. I don't own Editor (at least not yet) and you have to
download an XP patch at the Bernina site (www.berninausa.com) in order for
it to work with XP.

Hi Hancey,
Yes, you can sew without the lenses. Usually that is the way I sew. But
there are times with some feet and/or projects I need to see "up
close". Then I install one of the lenses. The bracket sticks out 1/2" or
so toward the front but I don't find it a problem. There is a little cover
that can be put on it but I don't bother.

I had this exact same problem with my 160 for several months. Then one
day I turned it on and nothing happened. I took it to the dealer and
they replaced a circuit board. Thank goodness it was under warranty.
 Warranty is 5 years.
Hope you can get it corrected soon.

Yes, the feet numbers changed when the computerized machines came out. The
presser feet for the 930 and below machines had 3 numbers. The feet for
those machines wouldn't fit the computerized machines, but the presser feet
with two black numbers will work on those machines. The presser feet for
the newest line of machines have red numbers and won't fit the 1130 thru
