Kathleen and everyone interested in these bags,

I was recently able to obtain a sample bag. Although I haven't sewn with
it yet, I have experimented with dissolving it. The piece I put in cold
water almost completely dissolved. The residue remaining was a small gooey
piece.

However, the one I put in my hottest tap water dissolved instantly!

The next part of my experiment is to sew with it as a stabilizer.

Congratulations, Robbi! That's wonderful.
The magazine will be even better now! :-)

I'm familiar with Quilting Arts, Robbie, and you must be thrilled. It's a
fabulous magazine and I'm thinking about subscribing....especially now!

My prize winning quilt, "Colours of St. Lucia" is still missing and at this
point I have little hope! Sure was hoping to enter in Paducah this year but
that's not going to happen! I also got word yesterday that Ellen Eddy has
recently had 5 of her fabulous quilts stolen from an exhibit. They can be
seen at: http://www.ellenanneeddy.com/eae.htm She has a wonderful website so be sure to take a look.

I will be "unsubscribing" from the Digest in another two weeks or so, while
we travel in our RV up the west coast, eventually ending in Puget Sound, WA
where we will stay for the month of August. We are also doing an Alaskan
cruise on the way. I have all my "projects" ready to go and this time I'm
taking both "Bernie" and "Feather" (in the RV...not on the cruise!) so that
I will have the "little guy" for a class at Sisters! Soon as I am in one
place I will re-subscribe..so don't talk about anything important while I'm
gone!! Hee Hee!

There are getting to be a lot of these..... in addition to Ellen Ann
Eddy's which was written about on Quiltopia, now this lovely one of
Dennie's and another seven in Houston (not at Festival BTW)

Dennie... your "St Lucia" was/is fabulous. I do hope it will show up.

But what are we quilters to do to protect our work??

the 4 directional sewing, using the sideways motion foot. I had an awful time seeing where I was going trying to cover the raw edge with zigzag. It looks like a line of scalloping. Is there another foot I could use that would give me more visibility sideways and back? I thought I heard that the 1630s had a foot that turned the direction you wanted to go? Why doesn't the 180? Could you use a darning foot to stitch sideways? Thanks, Carolyn"

The Bernina Rotary Foot #41 is the presser foot designed for use with
directional stitches. The foot can be rotated into 16 different positions
corresponding with the 16 stitching directions on machines capable of
directional stitching. I have one for my 1630 machine, and believe that
they are available for the 180 machines too. Check with your Bernina dealer
and ask for foot #41.

I have a 180E, purchased in October. During the first month, I learned that
the embroidery module didn't work. Then the auto buttonhole foot didn't
work, had it repaired, still doesn't work. A month a ago the bobbin case
froze and the dealer had my machine for two weeks. Two weeks have passed and
it happened again. Now I have to return to the dealer again which is a one
hour plus ride. Does Bernina have a lemon policy that will allow me to
switch my machine for one that is hopefully not a lemon? If not, I am going
to trade it in for a Janome. Can you help?

My dealer had my 180E from the last day in January to this Memorial Day
weekend. They had previously had it for 3 1/2 months. It now embroiders
for the first time, although I have had it since x-mas 2000. My problem
isn't Bernina itself, but the local dealership, a mom and pop deal which
seems not to recognize that it is a commercial enterprise. (e.g., repair
guy is the father-in-law, and we had a death in the family....we moved to a
new house and got off track... I drive there on a Sat., to discover the
store unexpectedly closed because it's a 3 day holiday and, "since we're
normally closed Mondays, we had to give our employees a day off, so we
closed on Saturday"...ugh!) I have considered trading, too, and for the
same reason. Good luck. DS

Bernina doesn't have a policy so it is up to your dealer to make good on the
machine. I would strongly suggest that you request a new machine from him
to replace yours. You should not be having that kind of trouble if it was
purchased new. And your dealer ought to stand behind it 100% and replace it
with a new one as long as you let him know that is the only way you will be
satisfied. You paid too much money to have this inconvenience.

Agree, you are entitled to a NEW machine. Now the good news is that bernina
dealers are usually very good about this. I got a lemon in a 145 and it was
promptly and cheerfully replaced with a new one. The dealer even said that if
I did not like the replacement machine, I could have a refund. You can't beat
that! Luckily the new machine appears to be just fine. You've had too many
major problems and i think your dealer will make it right. let us know!

Hi, I don't know if this will help, but I belong to several different quilt
groups and forums, and yours is not the first lemon from Bernina. I have
the Bernina 830 and love it, but from what I have read they aren't making
them as good as they used to. I upgraded two years ago, and went in to buy
new Bernina, but they were selling Janome's at the same place, and I fell in
love with the 4800. It is capable of doing quite a few things more for less
money. I will never give up my 830 though, it is too precious to me. I
wonder if it is time to start complaining to the Better Business Bureau. Or
threaten with legal action. The new machines are just soooo expensive, and
then to still be without one after owning one for 8 months. On the one
list, the gal is from Hong Kong, and owned the machine for about a year, and
has had very little use of it, as it is being sent in to the company, or
they are replacing the board or something. I wish you luck. Years ago, I
had a defective linoleum and the dealer would do nothing about it, so I
started writing to the Better Business Bureau, and it did get results.
Maybe someone else has a better solution, but that is all I could come up
with now. I should say, the main reason for not getting the new Bernina
was that none of my 830 feet would fit on the new machine. I have so many
feet for the 830. Good luck!----Marilyn-----

All this Bernina lemon talk is really making me reconsider buying a new
machine, but what I think should really happen here, is for Bernina to
start reading this list!!
