Ninth Annual Quilt Show
The Peaks and Pieces Quilt Guild and The Friends of the Bedford Public Library will co-host the Ninth Annual Bedford Quilt Show 2005 from Wednesday, July 13 until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 on the second floor of the Bedford Central Library. This event is made possible through the generous participation of the Peaks and Pieces Quilting Guild with the support of Friends of the Bedford Public Library, Inc. The exhibit of contemporary quilts showcases the work of dozens of talented quilt makers who use fabric to express their creativity. The Guild is also recognized in the community for the volume of charity quilts which the members create and donate each year. Over 100 quilts were created and donated in 2004 by the Guild.
This exciting exhibit will be open for viewing during normal library hours. Ribbons will be awarded to top quilts in the show, based on viewers choice. The public is invited to come learn more about quilting and this rich aspect of Bedfords heritage. The Annual Quilt Show continues to be one of the most anticipated art shows at the library each year. The show is open to the public and free of charge. The Supper Quilt, a monumental pieced quilt by Don Locke, composed of 51,816 half-inch squares modeled on Leonardo deVincis famous work, The Last Supper will be on display at the Schoolhouse Quilters twenty-fifth annual quilt show June 18th, 19th, and 20th at the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maryland. Dr. Locke, a retired dentist who worked on the quilt for two and a half years while still practicing dentistry, first created a computer-generated image of the original, enlarged to show pixels. He then selected, cut and sorted by color the 350 different fabrics used, including some of his own hand-dyed fabric. The pieces were arranged on a design wall and then sewed together in strips, using a Singer Featherweight sewing machine. The quilt is 15.3 feet wide and 5.5 feet high. After 1200 hours of work, the emerging design became apparent. The quilt was machine quilted by Linda Taylor of Melissa, TX. The machine quilting presented a new set of problems because the quilt was so large and because the image was not apparent to anyone working close to the fabric. Linda stated that it was the most challenging quilting work she had ever done. The quilt was completed in September 1999. It has been exhibited in 21 states and also in England, France, and Spain. Viewers have stated that seeing the quilt was a spiritual experience and have described it as breath-taking.
More than 300 quilts created by quilters from West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York will also be showcased in the show. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults and children 12 and under free. Quilts will be accepted on Wednesday, June 16th from 12 noon to 7 p.m. only. Other activities include a silent auction of miniature quilts, door prizes each hour, quilt appraisals, classes, demonstrations, a gift boutique, an opportunity quilt, the Hoffman Challenge Exhibit, a featured quilter, the Silver Challenge display, vendors, and the 2003 Peoples Choice Quilt. Jays Sharpening will also be available to sharpen scissors. Call 301-729-5464 for more information or go to www.schoolhousequilters.org. Quilt entries may be pre-registered online.
