International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX

Held at: Brown Convention Center, Houston, TX on: Oct 29 - Nov 4, 2001

Reviewer: Helen Fremin

Wonderful! That about sums it up! This is a "must attend" quilt show. If you've never come to IQF in Houston, start making plans now. The quilts on exhibit will just blow you away. There are so many vendors that you won't be able to take them all in. The Convention Center is an excellent facility. Lots of room, except around some of the vendors! You'll love the show! Come to Texas next Fall.

Vermont Quilt Festival 2001

Held at: Northfield, Vermont on: June 2001
Sponsored by: Vermont Quilt Festival Board

Reviewer: Betsy Greenfield

Each year the antique quilts are great. This year was no exception. The quilts from the book, Plain and Fancy, were as wonderful now as when the book was written. The teachers were exceptional, especially Anne Gallo, Susan Raban, Carol Doak - all from New England and all terrific. The scenery and the food from the great local restaurants made it a trip that I won't forget. Thanks to the wonderful volunteers and the hard working board of directors. An anniversary auction was held this year and the bidding was fast and furious - the auction was very well organized. On a sad note, everyone missed Doreen but her quilts were there for all to see. Thanks to the VQF for the memory quilt where we could all sign our names and write a message, we are looking forward to seeing it finished.

2001 - A Quilt Odyssey

Held at: Gettysburg, PA on: August 2 - 5, 2001

Reviewer: Kathy Travaglione

This show only started last year, but it's really a good one. I attended both years and enjoyed the classes each time. Teachers this year included Karen Kay Buckley, Didi McElroy, Elizabeth Carlson, Linda Carlson,Norma Campbell, Mimi Dietrich, Jeana Kimball, Alice Kolb, Brenda Papadakis, Joan Leake, Pat Sloan, and Sharon Kennedy. Took Karen Kay Buckley's class last year and really learned a lot. Would have taken another class with her this year but it was already full. Sign up early for these classes in 2002. I took half day classes on backgrounds, applique and labels plus two lectures. Enjoyed all and learned from all. Nice group of women. Great quilts and vendors - spent far more than I had intended to spend. Very nice exhibit of Pennsylvania quilts from Adams, Franklin and York Counties. Nice exhibit of Tahitian applique. In addition to the quilt show, the area is rich in Civil War history and even if you have already toured Gettysburg time and time again, there are many other Civil War sites not far away. My husband and son spend Saturday at a re-enactment of the Battle of Bull Run about 1.5 hours away in Virginia. My only complaint last year was the extreme heat in the exhibit hall, but the show organizers rented their own air conditioning units this year to try and solve that problem. Still a bit warm, but in the morning and after 4 the crowds thin out and it was quite comfortable. Looking forward to next year already.

For being Karol Marino's first show, she did really great!!! A few vendors, about a 100 quilts not including all the antique quilts, and of course the Keepsake collection. She had door prizes every hour. AQS appraiser. A wonderful person to be around. She did allot of things large guild don't do. She went all out.
Thank you Karol

Quilt Show

Held at: Western Heritage Park, Vernal, Utah on: August 1-11, 2001

Reviewer: Karen Belliston

I ran onto this show as we traveled through Vernal coming home from vacation. A delightful small-town quilt show. There were 50+ quilts made by local women. Such imagination, very interesting and beautiful! Many were machine-quilted but done expertly. It was free and not crowded. I hope to go again next year. They said it is the first two weeks of August annually.

22nd Annual Quilt Show of Glendale

Held at: Burbank CA on: Mar 23-25, 2001
Sponsored by: Glendale Quilt Guild

Reviewer: Alicia Lopez

Great show! This guild really knows how to organize a show!
This is a BIG guild show with a wide variety of quilt styles.
They even had a treasure hunt for young children to play which
worked out great for me, as I had my 11 year old stepdaughter
with me. SHe loved it.
Well organized, well advertised, good vendors, and LOTS to see.
Well worth the 2 1/2 hour drive for me to get there. In fact,
I went two days!

Paducah

Held at: Paducah on: April 25-27, 2001

Reviewer: Judy

The Paducah Show was wonderful. There were many beautiful quilts to see and lots of vendors. I loved every thing about the show! The only problem that was very clear to me was all the walking and the distance between different areas of the show and vendors. I was on a walker, so I was not able to do,and see all that I would have liked too. Otherwise it was excellent!

I saved for three years to go to Paducah and took my Mom with me. It was only an 8 hour drive!! It was great!! I loved the Japanese quilts the best. I really enjoyed the antique quilts at the Civic Center also and what is there to say about Hancock's other than I spent too much money?!! I'm not into the vendors and I was disappointed that I didn't find Fons and Porter, my faves, but all in all a great show and the town was so friendly and very pretty!

A Garden of Quilts, Kingwood Quilt Guild

Held at: Humble Civic Center, Humble, TX on: April 20 - 21, 2001
Sponsored by: Kingwood Area Quilt Guild

Reviewer: Helen Fremin

This was my first time to attend the show sponsored by the Kingwood Area Quilt Guild. The facitity (The Civic Center) was great! There was ample room for displaying the many gorgeous quilts; room for the 20 vendors; room for a quilt guild boutique and room left over for just visiting. This guild is very lucky to be able to use this facility.

Some of the special features of the show were: a beautifully appliqued donation quilt; a Miniquilt silent auction; a guild boutique that had a great assortment of quilts, dolls and other items; a fish pond which offered you a chance to win a bag of interesting quilt supplies; a theme blokck challenge; the Keepsake Quilting Traveling Trunk Show; about 20 vendors; and over 300 works of art!

*First Annual Quilt Fair

Held at: Galena, Illinois on: April 6-7, 2001

Reviewer: Edna Miller

My first time ever at a quilt show. There were many entries and vendors in a facility which proved to be too small for the event. Another show is planned for next year in another building which should alleviate the over-crowding.

We met lots of wonderful ladies who share our interest in quilting; we purchased projects to make and fabric for projects we designed.

There were numerous antique quilts to see and they were just wonderful. Next year, I plan to display my husband's great-grandmother's quilt! The quilt was made early in the 1960's when she was over 90 years young.

Dallas Quilt Celebration 2001

Held at: Dallas, TX on: March 23 -25, 2001
Sponsored by: Quilters Guild of Dallas

Reviewer: Helen Fremin

The Dallas show is always a delightful show. This year the show returned to better accomadations at the Trade Center. Even though the weather was rainy and cold the show was very well attended. In fact it seemed more crowded than previous years. The quilts were very well displayed and it was easy to view all of them. However the vendor area was a little confusing and I sometimes found myself going past the same booths because the rows sometimes didn't match up. Also there seemed to be less aisle space. I've always liked going to the Dallas show because the aisles between the vendors were always so wide. It is a great show with lots of great quilts and great assortment of vendors.

Georgetown Quilt and Stitchery Show

Sponsored by: Handcrafts Unlimited, G'town Heritage Society, Chisholm Trail Quilt Guild, G'Town Satellite-Austin Stitchery Guild

Reviewer: Helen

There were a lot of really nice quilts and a fair sampling of vendors. I wish they could find a bigger place to hold this show because it is really well attended. By 11 a.m. it was so crowded that you couldn't take a step without bumping into someone. They have some excellent people giving demonstrations but they don't have any room for them to give the demos. This would be an excellent show if they just had more room. And they need to give out some door prizes.

Great show. Well lite, open, lots of vendors. Well organized. Alot better then the Paducah show. Have talked to other ladies who feel the same way. Hope they do this again. My only objection to the show was that a large number of the quilts in the show were from Japan. Local quilters need to get on the ball.

AQS 2000 QUILT EXPOSITION

Held at: OPRYLAND HOTEL, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE on: AUG. 31 - SEPT. 3, 2000
Sponsored by: AQS

Reviewer: JOYCE

THE BEST SHOW I'VE SEEN!!! Extremely well organized, wide isles, friendly vendors, just brillant! I cannot say enough good about it. The one thing I would have to say that made the show so enjoyable was the location (LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION). Opryland Hotel & Convention Center is all under one massive roof and the hotel itself is a wonderful experience. This made the show even more comfortable to attend. The staff are superb - friendly and helpful. If you are lucky enough to get a room (worth the price!) at this hotel during the show, even better. But, there are a large number of very nice overflow hotels within minutes of the Opryland Hotel. I have never been to Paduchah but many ladies I talked with said this show would be their #1 choice hands down! If they decide, and I hope they do, to have this show again I will go and stay longer. Just minutes from the hotel is the Cumberland River where you can take a showboat ride. They organized one night for quilters which I hear was excellent. Huge conference rooms for lectures (no classes held this year but the lectures were outstanding)...Alex Anderson, Ami Simms, Mary Ellen Hopkins and more. I attended four lectures and one brunch - all SUPERIOR!!! A NOT TO BE MISSED SHOW!!!!

TO AQS: If you are reading this....WE WANT IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR!!!

The ONLY world-class quilt show in the Northeast. Features top-notch teachers, the highest over-all quilt standards of any of the country, and very good facility and parking. Located in typically quaint Vermont (small town). Lots of culture, museums, and beautiful scenic venues in short distances. Montpelier , the capitol, is home to The New England Culinary Institute, and some of the best eating in the World! Ben and Jerry's Factory, with guided tours and free tasting, is minutes away, and Burlington has the Chocolate Factory and Teddy Bear Factory for additional tours.
One of the best quilt shows in the country, has brought people nationally and internationally to its' fine quilts and teachers. Many come from Canada, France, Switzerland, Turkey , and all over the world to this show. Teachers this year, to name a few were, John Flynn, Katy Pasquini-Masopust, Ami Simms, Georgia Bonesteel, e.g., and in the past has had Doreen Speckmann, Alex Anderson, and many others.
Ably and professionally run by mostly volunteers and quilting professionals who judge, curate, and help, it is one of the best run, anywhere!
The weather, this year, was superb, with top temperatures never over 75, and with an earlier schedule, next year, will also be cooler, then.
This quilt show is not to be missed!

The show was very good, but if you are not able
to walk a lot you will be in trouble. We had to
park at least 4-5 blocks away. Once you get into
the building you have to walk a long distance be-
tween the different sections of the show. The
quilts were very pretty. My favorit part is the
vendors. There were lots and lots of them. It
seems to be getting bigger each year. I would not

Dallas Quilt Show

Held at: Fair Park on: March 10,11
Sponsored by: Dallas Quilt Guild

Reviewer: B.Noble

The show was wonderful as usual with great quilts. I thought the Trade Center offered many more amenities. At the Fair Park setting the meal choice was terrible and inadequate - hot dogs and hamburgs, nuked; the seating was practically non-existent with many sitting on the floor and long lines. The Trade Center had a wide variety of choice to suit everyone and the lighting was far superior. The ambiance was wonderful.

Dallas Quilt Show

Held at: Fair Park on: March 10,11,12
Sponsored by: Pfaff Sewing Machines

Reviewer: rquilt

Except for the venue, it was an excellent show. Moved to the 68-year old Fair Park from last year's World Trade Center, It was a nightmare. Dirt everywhere (no one had swept), pigeons flying and doing their thing, and poor security, in a very questionable neighborhood, causing the tourist brochures to warn against the danger of being there at night.
The quilts and guild people were excellent , with outstanding quilts. One done by a local dentist (a man) was a mosaic mural of the last supper, even garnering national notice on Paul Harvey's program. The millenium quilts were classic charm quilts, not seen in nearly 100 years, done by the guild quilters-Spectacular!
If a better facility can be secured, and some professional assistance contracted for, this show could compete with Houston, Paducah, or Lancaster.

Very nice show, not large, but well displayed. The nicest part was the attention given to children with a scavenger hunt and a tent set up to show children, by hands on drawings, about quilts and patterns. This is how we interest the next generation by welcoming them and getting their interest at a young age. The show helpers were unusually helpful, turning quilts to show backs and telling stories about the quilts. The labeling was also excellent. A label with a story is always great to read.

Reviewer: Helen Fremin

The Hummer 2000 was held in the First Presbyterian Church in Rockport, TX. There were approximatley 160 quilts and wearable art pieces exhibited. This was a "People's Choice" show. The quilts were wonderful. This area of Texas has many very talented quilters with excellent piecing and quilting skills. Many "winter residents" are also members of this group and bring their expertise and support to this area. There were also about 40 antique quilts displayed. These quilts were draped over the pews of the church and made a very beautiful display! There was a beautiful raffle quilt depicting Hummingbirds of the area and they also had a show pin with a Hummingbird. This was a very small show, with only three vendors from the area. It was an excellent show but I think they need to find a larger place to hold the show in the year 2002. I'll definitely be back in 2002!

First Juried show; fifth quilt show by a 9 year old guild. They hung 128 quilts and provided 28 vendors, many with unusual quilting related items. I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The guild takes the time to recognize new quilters, as well as established quilters. "Members Favorite" went to a relatively new quilter, while "Viewers Favorite" represented some of the best hand quilting and original quilt design I've ever seen. It was a relaxing way to spend the day. Featured were Gabrielle Swain, Sandra Millett and Marianne Fons (who unfortunately cancelled due to a death in the family). This was a very good show for a new guild.

I was really pleased with this quilt show. For a small town like Yakima the show was a wonderful production.
There were many beautiful quilts large and small. The way they were displayed made it easy to view them. Also
there were several vendors sit up to sell material, books, patterns, etc. which was really nice because we do
not have many quilt shops locally. It looked like most of Washington State was present. I hope they do this show
each year. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The small fee of $3.00 was worth every penny. I saw so many local quilters'
quilts it made me want to rush home and try to make a quilt as beautiful as they did. We sure have a lot of
talented quilters. I did not see any demos, but they did feature to local Artists. What a nice treat for Yakima.....

The challenge quilts were well displayed and explanations were great for those who weren't sure what a challenge is all about. There were also a number of beautiful cross-stitch pictures. Fabulous show! There were also 65 tables of crafters in the connecting arena with a couple of quilt fabric and pattern shops in the mix. This town also has a great little quilt shop that had some great sales during show time. I would definitely attend again! Two thumbs up ladies.

Valley Quilt Guild, 16th Annual Show

Held at: Yuba City, California on: March 20 and 21, 1999

Reviewer: Gale Turner, RCQG, Sacramento, Ca

A delightful, small town show, always an absolute pleasure to attend! Yuba City is about 45 minutes away from Sacramento, California and a leisurely drive past orchards, horses, quaint towns and colorful wildflowers. I know when I see a quilt that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, that I've seen a truly award winning quilt! And that's exactly how "JACOB'S DREAM" by GRACE CROCKER impressed me! Her applique and use of lights, darks, and shadowing for this Biblical theme was incredible! It's my goal in life to be such an accomplished quilter as Grace, a fellow quilter whom I've never met. Also favorites of mine were "FIRST COLOR CHOICES" and "BAKER'S DOZEN" both by KATE MACKENSEN, longtime member of Sacramento's RIVER CITY QUILT GUILD, but who has since moved to the Yuba City/Marysville area and taken her talents to the Valley Quilt Guild (our loss, their gain). An original idea that surprised me and gave me all kinds of creative thoughts was the "wind socks" in quilt themes catching the breeze at the entrance of the show. It was such a unique idea that I'm still thinking about it. I rate this quilt show as "very good" and one that I always make sure not to miss.

This show is held in Thomas Hardy's 'Casterbridge' and the little town is a living reminder of his wonderful stories and poems.
I have been to see the exhibition twice (so far) and have picked out some of the comments written in the Visitors' Book as being a fair reflection of what they have seen.

*A truly magnificent display - what talent!

*Wonderful selection, beautiful work - I'll have to come again! They take my breath away - excellent!

*Awe inspiring - the imagination, the patience, the dedication. . . .

*A riot of colour!

*Wonderful works of art and exquisite needlework. An incentive to robbery !

*What a range of ideas - the modern quilts are amazing works of art and the Welsh quilts so vibrant."

What more can I add except to say that when you have finished looking at the quilts you can spend another happy hour wandering around the fascinating museum itself------A GREAT DAY OUT! Bet Thompson

This show was excellent. Coastal Quilters' first

terrific work going on in the interim. I've been
attending quilt shows and classes for only a few

sometimes too much for a local guild to create
enough new excellent work. I'm sure these quilters

I went to this guilds show last year and enjoyed it very much. This year topped it by ten times!! They had a much larger site, the quilts were displayed nicely and not too crowded. They had only a handful of vendors last year, and this year had dozens!! This show is viewers choice, which makes it fun for those attending. All quilts were in categories(wall,bed-sized,groups etc..)They were in nice wide aisles, you didn't feel crowded at all. The show site is in the middle of downtown Boise, close to everything, alot of it within walking distance. I can't wait until next year, to see how this dynamic guild outdoes itself again. Be sure and look for it next fall!

Barnswallow Quilt & Craft Show

Reviewer: Dawn S.

This was the 10th annual show put on by this group. I've been to every show and they keep getting better and better. The show was moved to a larger facility this year so you could view the quilts without stepping on someone. The raffle quilt was again a sight to behold! Lots of applique and fine quilting! Hard to believe they sell the tickets for only $1.00

There were lots of beautiful and different quilts to look at but it was a little confusing finding out a little about the quiltmakers as everything was published in a catalogue and you had to refer back and forth from the numbers on the quilt to the book.

The craft show was okay but could have been laid out a little better with more variety of goods for sale.

The location was easy to find with lots of free parking. It was wheelchair accessible and the admission of $2.00 was definitely worth it. It's my understanding that this group is planning to hold next year's show in the same facilities. It would be definitely worth your while to attend!

Hundreds of beautiful quilts are hung on the outsides of the buildings in old downtown Petaluma. A gorgeous display of colors and patterns; antique quilts, modern quilts, traditional quilts, small, large. Many quilts on display in the numerous antique shops. Featured quilter this year was Judy Mathieson. Quilt classes preceed the show earlier in the week. An antique car show is held on the Saturday of the quilt show. Reviewer: Cathy Pedersen

This is the second year that I've attended, not sure how many years they've held this show.
In many ways it was better than last year, better organized.
Although I think the morning was spent basically checking at all of the vendors that were in attendance. They could have had someone speak on a specific topic in the morning for those that had had enough of the vendors.
Enjoyed the afternoon scheduled speaker on dying of material. She unfortunately kept referring to the class she was teaching the next day (only 25 could take the class), She probably has 200 in attendance on the afternoon of the quilt show.
I enjoyed the show n tell, I wish that the flier talked about bringing items for show n tell, only the guild members that sponsored the quilt show knew. I'm looking forward to next May to see how it improves.
For people in West Virginia its a nice thing to attend.

Seabreeze Quilt Guild Show

Held at: Congregational Church, East Kingston, NH on: May

Reviewer: Suzanne

This was my first quilt show. It was held in the church and when I walked in, it felt like I was in heaven. The quilts were laid out on the pews and the altar. It was an older church with a lovely warm feel to it, so the quilts had found a perfect home. There were many different skill levels and styles blended together (a perfect setting under Gods roof!) A previous years Viewers Choice was hung on the altar - a real beauty. I had my three young children with me and the woman at the entrance were wonderful about offering them some lovely gloves to wear - making it sound like it would be such fun to wear them! I think that this was probably a small show compared to most, but the atmosphere was warm and friendly and the quilts were just beautiful. I look forward to attending there next show.

2nd Annual Boerne Quilt Festival

Held at: Boerne, Texas on: May 2, 1998
Sponsored by: Boerne Library

Reviewer: Eva Broz

The quilts were hung all around outside in the Town Square. Feathered in between the quilts were the quilt vendors. Quilt angels protected the quilts from curious fingers and helped onlookers to better see the quilts. Quilts were also hung from the balcony of the Boerne Library and smartly displayed in every storefront in this small, quaint Texas town. The show opened at 10AM on May 2, 1998. The weather was fit for airing the finest of quilting masterpieces. As the winds gently blew across the town square, gracefully lifting the corners of these artistic impressions, the townspeople and visitors gathered cheerfully to view, visit, buy and stand in awe of those with such magnificent talent. Even though the show only lasted one day, we decided to stay on one more day just to take in the friendly, summer atmosphere and enjoy all that Boerne, Texas had to offer. You can be sure that I will be looking forward to the 3rd annual quilt show at Boerne, Texas.

Tulip Festival Quilt Show

Held at: Anacourtes, WA on: April 17-18, 1998
Sponsored by: Fidalgo Island Quilters

Reviewer: Terri Snider

This show was a lot of fun, and there were many more quilts than I had expected. I think the most impressive quilt was one which was made by a couple for his parent's 60th wedding anniversary. There were twelve blocks of counted cross-stitch portraying quilts in settings for each month of the year. The husband did the cross-stitch blocks, and the wife put them together into the quilt. It was beautiful. There were also some wonderful Irish Chain quilts, including a king size one which had red flowers on a black background. And some of the quilted clothing was awesome, especially the quilted jackets.

After leaving the Quilt Show, we went into downtown Anacourtes for lunch and enjoyed the Quilt Walk there. The quilters had placed about 30 quilts in the stores downtown for the week, and they selected the appropriate quilt for each store type. It was neat seeing how some of the stores had incorporated the quilts into their storefront displays.

I will definitely be there next year to enjoy more beautiful quilts, especially if the weather cooperates again and makes the two hour drive as pleasant as it was this year.

quilts displayed was enormous, the talent of the
quiltmakers was overwhelming and the ones I talked
to were soooo nice. The printed program was incredibly

PNQE

Held at: Fort washington, PA on: Sept 1996
Sponsored by: Mancuso Brothers

Reviewer: Jo

I was surprised to read the favorable review of this show. The vendors were good/interesting but that's where the list ends. The quilts for the show were arranged in a confusing way and broken into different areas of the hall so that I found out later I had missed a whole section.

The facilities , in general, were not good. The class rooms were small and cramped (which transcended discomfort and turned into dangerous in one class - Rotatry Cutting).

The center, itself was in a 'can't get here from there' location. It was hard to get back and forth from the hotels and what few (which is to say two) restaurants there were within 10 minutes were extremely difficult to find. The Mancuso's did nothing to help in the way of maps or local information.

My biggest problem was the Mancuso brothers themselves (at least the younger one). Briefly, my sewing machine broke down the first day in the first class (which was unbearably cramped, the teacher forgot she was teaching because she was too busy running her booth, when she finally showed up, she had an attitude and didn't even bring what she said we were going to do in the course description). As a result, I could not take the class I had sceduled for the next day. I went to the registration desk immediately and told them I had to back out. They refused to refund my money. After much discussion, the woman agreed to put me in another class (which was how I wound up in Rotary cutting where the teacher felt free to entertain her many friends who stopped in to chat with her while the whole class had nothing to do except sit and watch them converse). I suggested to the woman that she post the vacancy in the oversubscribed class I had to vacate and she told me they don't do that (why, I don't know; they had put me on waiting lists for two other classes even though this made it clear they were joke lists that had no meaning or use because the staff was too lazy to follow up on them - I mean not even a bulletin board on an easel with a note - NOTHING). I sustituted my $50 class for a half day class and a lecture. The woman still refused to refund the $10 or $15 left over.

Subsequently, I met Mary Stori (who is wonderful, interesting and a very competent teacher. I decided to go to the Fairfield Fashion Show to see more of Mary's work. This time, the younger Mr. Mancuso was at the desk. I briefly described what had happened and said I would like to use my remaining 'credit' on the Fashion Show. He informed me that he was going to sternly upbraid the woman who made these changes for me because that was totally inappropriate and that not only did he owe me nothing; I owed him (mind you neither the class nor the lecture I switched into were full and the class I moved out of had a waiting list and could have been filled had they tried). Neither was the Fairfield Show sold out and it was scheduled to take place in 4 hours. I pointed all this out and he still refused.

It became very clear to me that there was a huge difference between shows put on by Quilt Guilds (like Images '97 and A Quilter's Gathering inWestford) and those run by men trying to make money. The greed shows and it is not pretty. The Mancuso's also run the Mid Atlantic and other East Coast Shows. I also believe they work the West Coast. I strongly urge their shows be avoided until the Mancuso's learn the art of customer service and that what goes around comes around - good and bad.

Just had to share my second quilt show ever. It was held in historic Boise Train Depot,on a hill over looking the city--beautiful location. It was a viewers choice show, which made it fun, and was especially nice as I had my two young children with me, and "voting" on their favorites really kept their attention!! They normally would not have lasted long enough for me to see all the quilts. They had a big crowd but you could still manage to see everything without too many elbows. Vendors from local quilt shops were on the peremiter of the space, they were very helpful and gracious. The only refreshments was a hot dog stand but the depot was just down the road from lots of restaurants. One fun aspect was the door prizes. They must have had a million of them because it seemed everyone who walked in the door received one! Our group alone one two great prizes, I was thrilled! Overall, a very pleasant experience.

I visited this show on the final day and therefore
I think we missed seeing a lot of small quilts that
had been auctioned off the day before for charity.
My companion was my daughter and I think she enjoyed
her first quilt show. Because of the merchants in the
Crown Center, the Guild is not allowed to have vendors.
However, almost every shop in the center was handing
out quilt patterns printed on letter size paper and
that was quite nice. After viewing the quilting demo
in the lobby, the choice quilts near the entrance and
then the bulk of the quilts in a large hall, we were
ready to walk about the center, darting into each
shop for a free pattern! (I think I embarassed my
daughter..8>)))) This was a lovely show in kind of
an unusual setting, but I understand they have a
long tradition at the Crown Center. It was a real
treat for this Californian and her daughter!

We have all been to major quiltshows across the United States but nothing compares to seeing the play of sun and shadow on quilts hung outdoors. We stayed at the show for most of the day, at times quilts we wanted to see had crowds around them, we just went down a different street (not aisle, as with indoor shows. The townspeople were very friendly. The library was having a sale (first time we came home from a quilt show with non-quilting books!!) Yeah to all the hardworking people who are needed to pull off such a great show in ONE DAY! The setting is fabulous. I could go on and on. Just GO and see for yourself. I have been attending this show for four years now and stay longer each year to observe, attend class and lectures and buy (most times more than I "need"). Parking, registration and accommodations are no-hassle. The show is contained under one roof at the Expo Center and affords good sized aisles to accommodate the crowds at the vendors sites. The quilts are exceptionally well-displayed for viewing. One note, I took my video camera along to film bits of the vendor mall and the quilts on display so that I could view it all more leisurely upon returning home. The registration folks at the door gave me approval to use my camera, but I did find one vendor hostile as I was panning the crowd to give my quilt guild back home an idea of how vast this show really is. Perhaps the obly drawback of the show is the size of the classrooms. Of the three years I've taken classes, the rooms have been cramped each time. Otherwise, I must say that the show is well-worth attending whether your taste runs traditional or innovative/contemporary. Note that the organizers of this show also are responsible for the Pacific International Quilt Festival (held this year on October 23-26 and the Williamsburg (VA?) Festival (Spring Feb-March) 1998, though I've never attended either of those.

National Quilt Show

Held at: Paducah, Kentucky on: Late April
Sponsored by: NQA

This show was very, very crowded. I went on Friday. You could hardly move for all the people.
There were 3 areas where quilts and items were displayed and then vendors around the perimeter of each area. The vendors need more room to spread out because of the number of people. The quilt/vendors theirselves were wonderful. Very helpful. The food vendors were a different story. As you get your ticket and walk into the show, in the middle of the walkway was a food vendor. Their prices were double what you normally pay.
The quilts were absolutely wonderful! But you could not stand and look and appreciate for long because of the crowds also pushing and wanting to see the quilts. I only went for 1 day so I thought I'd look into staying at the hotel next year. If you want a reservation you pay $5.00 to be in a lottery. They will draw out so many names, call the people and see if they want reservations. She said they did not know how many people they were going to take reservations for at this time. So, If 3,000 of us paid $5.00, they may only take 250 and the rest are out the $5.00. Granted the $5.00 was supposed to go towards flood relief, but I would rather be asked for a donation rather than be used this way. I was really disappointed inthe logistics of the show. I did not go to the museum but my sister (who doesn't quilt) said this is worth it any time of the year. She was very impressed.

Reviewer: Vickey Lorenzi

I have never been to a quilt show before so I don't have anything to compare it to.
I loved seeing all the beautiful works of art created by others. One in particular was
done by a local grammar school. It was created in 1976 for our country's bicentennial.
Historic Richmond Town is a preserved section of old homes as far back as the 1800's. The
displaying of the quilts were set up in different homes, which there were about 5 that were
once occupied by people of this historic town.

Of special interest were 2 quilts by Mary Totten which were the most beautiful sights to see.
One of which was created around 1835 and rarely is displayed. So this was quite a treat for me.

There was also a vendor set-up in the main (Historic)Courthouse were you were able to purchase
fabric.

The only bad point was that being that these homes are historic there was no electricity and Saturday,
May 17th was not a sunny day all day. I had trouble videotaping some of these beautiful displays.

I can't wait till next year's show.

The city hall is a beautiful building, with etched
glass doors inside and very good lighting. The quilts
are displayed on all four floors of the building and
in a large room on the top floor.

Of particular interest are three of Michael James'
new work--the style is completely different from his
old work. (you can see both styles on Penny Nii's
web page, www.penny-nii.com/) The City Hall owns one
of his older works which is installed in the circular
stairwell, so you can compare it to the new work.

The members of CQFA have varied styles which embrace
the entire quilt spectrum, from traditional to the
wildest contemporary quilts. Also shown are work by
Joy Stocksdale, Judith Content, and Therese May, local
art quilts who have achieved some renown.

The show is free, and so is the parking in the garage
under the building. One block away is a large quilt
shop, the Quilting Bee, making this a perfect stop
for vacationing quilters.

Beautiful examples of hand quilting, including quilts by Tillie Mozer, were present, as well as every other level of quilt making - including some made by school children that were very exciting. Over all, the show was very nice, however, since space was filled, some of the quilts were not displayed where they could be readily viewed by visitiing public, and that was a shame. They need to work on their placement for their next quilt show. The guilt ladies worked very hard on this presentation, and it was obvious from the smoothness with which this show was run.
