Question of the Week

Question for the week of October 13, 2003:

Our question this week comes Katie:

In your opinion what would be the best quilt to make as a wedding present ?

Tal H. :
In the past I have made quilts using a flat sheet as the backing. I know that this is usually a "no,no". I present the quilt to the bride and groom along with a fitted sheet, pillow cases, and top sheet that match. This way they have a beautiful set to use on a daily basis. Make sure that the colors and style will fit the room they already have otherwise they wont use it no matter how nice it is.

Wanda B :
For one of my daughters wedding I had made all her bridesmades dresses. So after the wedding I made her a Double Wedding Ring quilt from the scraps. It turned out beautiful. I had 3 colors to work with so all I had to do was purchase the white. She still has it today.
charlotte :
I have made one quilt as a wedding gift, and it was the Double Wedding Ring. However, it was not the traditional pattern, but templates -- quite easy and every bit as pretty as the traditional one.
Cheryl K :
I am working on a double wedding ring quilt right now. And it is paper pieceing. I am loving it so far. I haven't started on the melons that go into the rings. But I'll let you know how its going in a couple of years. I never finish anything.
Kathy in WA :
A Double Wedding Ring is a traditional wedding quilt design and wonderful, but it is a challenge. I made one, but won't do another for a wedding for a while.

There are so many simple but elegant designs such as a Double Irish Chain that make great wedding quilts. This can be enhanced with great quilting in the open squares.

In the past I have made (or made with a group) a sampler quilt for weddings. If you do this you can choose blocks with names that have special meanings. Along with the sampler I would make up a little booklet with the meanings. (Patience Block--patience is necessary in any marriage. Contrary Wife, Ornery Husband--there are times when you may feel this way, but don't give in to it. Blocks that include the bride or groom's names, home, special interests, etc would be good, too.)

Keep the couple in mind--if they like traditional things, the a traditional design is fine, but if they have more contemporary tastes, a traditional quilt might end up in a closet.

Wanda Adams :
Double Wedding Ring
Nancy :
A Christmas quilt - especially lap or throw size - is a good idea because you don't have to worry about color schemes.
ann :
A wedding quilt, any quilt is very
personal. So the best quilt should have
the colors and interests of the couple.
