Question of the Week

Question for the week of August 25, 2003:

Our question this week comes Jennifer , Brazil:

I do not have access to purchase cotton batting, and have an aversion to all things polyester!! Are there any alternatives to batting with which to fill a quilt-flannel for instance, or cotton felt? We live in a very hot city so I don't need my quilts to be particularly warm, or fluffy.

Laura :
Flannel works very nice for a light weight guilt. Two layers of flannel should look very nice if you are doing some hand guilting. If you wanted a warmer quilt but still light weight a wool fabric could be used, but take care in washing because of shrinkage, you would always want to wash in cold water. Wool quilts very nice.

Jean :
"summer" quilts I have seen from years ago have either NO BATTING or a thin flannel sheet for batting. Also some real old pot holders I have taken apart to copy have layers of old clothing basted together for the insulation.
