Question of the Week

Question for the week of June 17, 2002:

Our question this week comes Nancy E, Elsie , & Bette

I have heard about lap quilting and would like any infomation you have about it. Is it different? - I am making my first quilt by quilting each block and then sewing them together, any suggestions. Are there any books on this subject with sample quilts best to quilt this way? - I am making a quilt & travel frequently. I would like to guilt it while traveling. How do I go about quilting a block at a time & then assemble the quilt.

Note: Several people have asked very similar questions in the last week so I've lumped them all together for this week's question.

Pam H. :
Just an idea about quilting one block at a time - I've done this sometimes and like to do at least 4 blocks sewn together at a time. Not to big to handle in our car while traveling. If you leave a few stiches not quilted near where your seams are going to be and finish them after sewing that part of the back on it helps hide the seams on the back.

Louise :
I agree with Dot. You can get the front of the quilt looking fairly good, but it's REALLY hard to get the back done well. I wish somebody would invent an easy way to do one block at a time because it would be so easy to take with you.
Pat :
See Robbie Fanning's book ¨The Complete Guide to Machine Quilting¨ for the best answers. There are several options that are discussed.
Dot :
I don't think a lot of people who want to quilt a block at the time know how difficult it is to put the blocks together so it looks good. The backs always seem to be a "mess" and I know people who have quilted blocks for a quilt and have never put them together.
Chris :
Look for the book "Lap Quilting" by
Georgia Bonesteel, all your questions
will be answered. Check your local
bookstore or library for a copy.
Very good book.
