Question of the Week

Question for the week of March 11, 2002:

Our question this week comes Reta Hall

How to do the backing of a crazy quilt done? Is it quilted like a regular quilt or is it tied?

Kathy again :
I guess there were as many opinions about how to do things then as there are now. ¡Ü¡

Kris in MA :
I also have an antique crazy quilt and it is finished with a wool back, no batting, and the feather stitch to secure the layers.
Kathy in WA :
I am fortunate to have a small antique crazy quilt, and this is how it was done. The crazy work is done on a foundation, much as paper piecing is today only on a fabric such as muslin. (Mine is a blue and white print which looks like it could be from the 1890s-1910s. I can see it where some of the old silks have shredded.)Once the pices were in place and the embroidery was done, a backing was applied by tying. There is no batting in this quilt as the top fabrids are heavy. The tying was done from the back, and only through the foundation. The ties are on the back, and only in a few spots do they mistakenly catch the top fabric. the three fabrics are securely connected--the top to the middle and the back to the middle--just not the top to the back. I hope thia helps.
