Question of the Week

Question for the week of July 30, 2001:

Our question this week comes from Debbie Jensen

I found some flour sacks - does anyone know how they are used in quilts? Do I have to remove the writing first or use it in the quilt?

jenny :
i have just got some as well and i'm going to us them as the backing for a quilt with the printed side up...i am also about to make a small wall hanging from one for my kitchen , just by quilting around the writting and then binding it...just for something different.

Laura :
First, if the "writing" on the sacks is painted, I would recommend washing the sacks with a light-colored fabric to make sure that the paint won't damage the fabric. If I had flour sacks, I would try to make some creative kitchen-related pattern with country colors, like different shades of brown, and then I would cut out the words in the sacks and make them into separate blocks, maybe with some applique on them. Then I would use the remainder of the fabric from the sacks for patchwork- the Ohio Star and Churn Dash patterns are great for a country, old-fashioned look. You could use the sacks in a wall hanging for your kitchen. Be creative with colors, use your imagination, and you will have a unique quilt with lots of personality!!! Above all, relax and have fun!!!
Lynette :
If I had them, I would use them with the writing. Maybe the writing could be the centre of stars, or maybe the whole thing should just be big blocks of writing with fillers like checkerboard and flying geese. Lucky you!
