Question of the Week

Question for the week of June 25, 2001:

Our question this week comes from Cindy Kruse

What have you found is the best pattern to use a fussy cut in?

Marjorie :
Almost any block can be treated to a fussy cut. The centers of log cabin squares, the trusty nine-patch, and even the sawtooth star. I even did a sampler quilt for my daughter which featured rabbits "fussy cut" in each of the different blocks.

bjd :
I did a "I Spy" using hexagons. It was a great take along project to hand sew while I was waiting at daughter's dance class.
Mary Dixon :
Attic Windows is one of my favorites. It gives me the focus on the fussy cut that stand out.
Vicky Torrey :
If there are only a few motifs you want to use, try making a Triple Rail and substitute motifs for some of the Rail Blocks in an eye-pleasing placement. Works really cute in baby quilts.
barb :
Triple Irish Chain
Pat :
Gerri-There are several great books out with I Spy quilt patterns in them. Try Ami Simms book - it's my fav. Good Luck!
Janice Fisher :
Attic Windows
Gerri :
Speaking of "I Spy," I have seen a couple but never made one...Does anyone have directions they can share?
Thanks!
Pat :
A fussy cut means centering the template over a specific motif, generaly cutting only one piece at a time, thereby getting the motif in the center of the patch. It's great for I Spy quilts and any pattern, especially for kids, where you want to showcase a great fabric.
Gillian :
Would anyone mind reviewing for me just what a fussy cut is?
Susan :
I like to use square in a square, attic window or alternate a nine-patch with a snowball block for fussy cut fabrics.
