Question of the Week

Our question this week comes from Jackie Root

Our Quilt guild has had the offer of a local boy scout that would like to build us the stands that we hang our quilts on in our quilt shows for his eagle project - where could I find plans for quilt display units?

NancyS :
We built some for our quilt show using pcv piping. There was a bar across the top and one across the middle. They could accommodate 1 large quilt or two small ones. Piping pieces formed the legs and feet to keep them standing. The crossbars were not permanently attached so you could slide it through the quilt's sleeve then put the pipe back in it's coupling.

Louise :
I don't know about stands for quilt displays, but I have two sons who are Eagle Scouts--Bless your heart for helping out this Boy Scout! I hope somebody writes in soon with some good information for you.
Elise :
I don't know about plans to make one. But I have seen some really nice stands made from wooden ladders. I would imagine that you could have him make ladders rounghly four or five feet, with a foot to a foot and a half between the rungs and some kind of "legs" that would swing out so the ladder could stand free. I'm thinking of apple orchard ladders. You could make them as wide as you wanted to minimize the number of folds you would need to put in the quilts.

The other way I have seen it done, if you are worried that your quilts would be damaged by folding (old quilts sometimes are) is to create a frame somewhat larger than the full size of the quilt. Stretch a piece of white cloth (flannel) over the frame and carefully pin the quilt to it. You can put several frames together like a book and "flip" through them to see all of the quilts.
