Question of the Week

Question for the week of August 28, 2000:

Our question this week comes from Janna

When hand quilting, how do you knot the end of the thread so nothing shows and the end is secure?

Leslie :
I learned to cut a double-long piece of thread, take a stitch in the middle of the quilting line and pull the thread through until half the length is on either side of the stitch. Then I quilt from one side, hide the knot like the others have described, and go back and quilt from the other side of the thread. That way I only have knots to hide at the end of the quilting.

myla :
I gently tug the knot down through the top of what I am quilting so that it ends up inside the quilt. It helps to hold the fabric tight next to where the knot will enter the fabric.
Country Creek Peddlers :
Make a small knot in your quilting thread. Take ONE stitch from the TOP of your quilt at the beginning of your quilting design, but just go into the batting, not all the way through to the back. Pull that one stitch tight and rub the knot with your fingernail until it POPS into the batting. End your thread the same way.
Jeannie Hubbard :
I knot the end of my thread and put it in 1/2 inch from where I will begin quilting and back up where I will begin quilting. Wile using the end of my needle to pull up on the quilt top fabric, I give the thread a quick pull which pops the knot through the quilt top and traps it between the quilt top and the batting.

I am ready to quilt.

Thanks, Jeannie

Louise :
I do the same thing--tie a SMALL knot in the thread. Insert the needle about 3/4" from the staring point and gently tug the knot through to the batting layer. When I start the quilting, I take a small backstitch at the beginning.
Irene Peer :
I tie a note in thread and start stitching away from line to be quilted. Bring needle up on line to be quilted and when knot comes to material, I give it a tug and the knot pops to underside where it will not be seen.
