Question of the Week

Question for the week of November 16, 1998:

Our question this week comes from J. Mayle

In reading an article about quilting published in 1882, It referred to a quilt as being "Gamboised." What does this mean?

mindy gilkison :
after talking about quilting for hours on the phone and telling my 92 yr old grandmother what was on the computer, she said she had never heard of the term. but like always the trusty dic. says something quilted. go figure...

Dawn Thrift :
Cheryl's response is correct. Gamboised means to be padded or quilted. The word may have come from "gambeson" which was a padded and quilted doublet worn under armor, over armor or as armor. I found the word defined at http://www.messiah.edu/hpages/facstaff/gdaub/armor/glossary.htm. This is a glossary of arms and armor. Gamboised probably isn't used much anymore since we don't wear armor! Dawn Thrift at dawn.thrift@mts.com
Cheryl :
Gamboised referred to something that was
padded or quilted. It could even refer
to something like a saddle.
