Question of the Week

Question for the week of July 6, 1998:

Our question this week comes from Missy McCroskey

What are the best storage ideas or products available for storage of an heirloom quilt or just any quilt and is there a way to keep fabric from yellowing?

kimfox@usa.net :
Take a tip from my great-great aunt: Every quilt I have of hers came complete with a matching slip cover made of the same cotton as the quilt and decorated with the same motif!

nora :
always store any quilt in a pillow case.Never in a plastic bag.
DTWINS2@aol.com :
Store quilts in a white pillow case
s&rstaples@aol.com :
You should store your quilt in a quilted bag. The bag can be made of quilted material purchased at a fabric store.
At least once a year put your quilt on the bed for a couple of days.
Barb Thornton :
ALl the other ideas are excellent. I just want to add that you should never store a quilt directly into a cedar chest because of the wood oils.
Marcia Hibbard :
Store quilts in a white pillow case.
loreen@ibm.net :
I heard wrapping the quilt in acid-free tissue paper and storing it in a dark enviroment (closet) and from time to time refolding it.
Charlotte Seaton :
Fold inside out, store in a muslin pillowcase, and above all - do not place in a plastic bag! Refold several times a year, and air out (place on top of a bed for a few days) once a year.
Mindy Gilkison :
fold quilt with acid free tissue, and store in a cool dark place, if you like put the quilt in a white pillowcase. The most important thing is to refold the quilt at least every three months to keep creases from forming.
