Question of the Week

Question for the week of December 15, 1997:

Our question this week comes from Sue T

What handmade gifts are you giving this year?

Cindy Conley :
I made my niece an upholstered chair & ottoman for her American Girl doll. Very cute, and not nearly as difficult as I expected.

Joyce E. Burr :
1. Plaid table runner (burgandy, green and white) w/6 matching napkins.
2. Baby quilt (seed packet pattern in muted crayon colors)
3. Molded paper ornaments (antique finish w/embellishments)

Jeannine :
A schoolhouse lap quilt for one son (in burgundy, cream & hunter green) and a cathedral window pillow (from scraps he will recognize from growing up) for the other son. Also "angel buddies," complete with cardboard wings & copper wire halos, for just anybody who needs an angel around during the holidays.
annie :

lenora speller :

Rwbordeaux :
I sewed "quilt block pillow covers" for friends. They had button closures so they could be slipped over an existing pillow for a new look, or over a pillow form purchased from the fabric store. It was fun to select a block and find fabric that suited each friend. These projects were economical, quick to make, and easy to mail.
donna skvarla :
Felt pincushions to all my quilting friends.
Susan Fluharty :
I made my brother a flannel quilt for Christmas from a pattern in the Thimbleberries Book of Quilts called "Fireside Cozy". This was the forth quilt that I have made from this particular pattern. I used Thimbleberries flannel fabric which is very nice quality. Flannel quilts are wonderful, so if you haven't tried one yet, you should!
Kim Wiggins :
I've made matching potholders and dish towels for my grandmother, aunts, mom and SIL. I don't have the time to make them the bed quilts they've been begging for, so I hope this keeps them happy for a LITTLE while!

I also made my son a bed quilt from some of the blocks I received in the ID4 swap from last summer. It's not really a surprise, because he has watched me put it together, but he doesn't know it's for him!

Rose Petersen :
An Etui for my SIL. She had given me some1Chinese silk pajamas that she had worn1and thought I would like the material as I Crazy Quilt.1I made the etui out of that material. It is gorgeous, a1nice chinese blue. She will be pleased
Sammy "G" :
Made a loverly paper pieced and machine trapunto wall-hanging for my sister-in-law (which necessitated a proper shelf with dowel to hang it). Between quilting, woodworking, tole painting and music, I am one busy "renaissance" woman. (No more jack-of-all trades)!
Kristie Stokes :
I found a quilt top at a senior citizen craft fair and I am going to try to learn to quilt. My gift is a birthday gift for my grandmother, she will be 81 in March. I am taking a picture of my quilt and sending copies to all of my great-aunts and aunts inviting them to come and help. They all quilt already, 6 greats and 3 aunts. It will mean more to me than all of them later on in my life, I am 28.
I also found out who made the top and sent her a thank you note for making such a beautiful quilt for me to learn on. It is a Lover's Knot. She sent me a needle and quilting tips.
Lenore Lawrence :
Not as many as in years past!!

I've done a vest for my MIL, husband's aunt and son's teacher. Have made pants for another son. Last year I gave quilts to my brother's kids.....this year, he gets a quillow. Time is such a precious commodity!! If I could only quit working, I'd have time.....but, no money........oh well. Happy Holidays to all!!

Cherie Pingle :
I'm excited! My daughter took a quilting class from me in 1988. I will be giving her quilt to her - completed - 153 quilting hours later.

I also give sets of rubber stamped cards as stocking gifts.

Amanda Lee :
This year I made two neckties for two of the men in my family. The tie comes in a simple pattern that is very easily to put together. The most difficult part is the cutting, but they sew up easily and quickly. They can be made out of silk, but cotton is easier and cheaper to work with, and it also gives a nice finished product.
Martha A :
Lace and satin pillow shams, mens ties, and lace collars.
Diane Johnson :
I made large bears (36") and dressed
them. The one for my sister-in-law is
a school teacher, as is she.
Carol Alberts :
I giving a queen size quilt that is ALMOST done and many ornaments out of a Debbie Mumm Christmas book. On the baking side carmels, turtles, cookie assortment and chocolate covered peanut butter balls.
DEBBIE :

Kay Denny :
I made wallhanging called "A Tale of Two Tabbies". Each kitty has button eyes and nose. It's for my favorite aunt who is a cat lover like I am. I'm getting a kitten for Christmas.
Fawn S. :
I am giving a wedge tree skirt, a victorian Christmas stocking, and a grandmothers fan quilt that's taken me 2 1/2 years to complete.
Ellen Tanis :
I am giving three quilts; a nine patch in plaids, a "winter in the north woods", and a racing car medallion as well as jams, jellies and cookie platters.
karen.graham@juno.com :
Small machine quilted wall hangings
embellished with beads.
Sandra Leichner :
I decided to use my stash of "questionable" taste fabrics in my stash to make my mother-in-law a lap quilt for Christmas.
However, much to my surprise, the completed quilt ended up stunning! Is there a lesson Here? (grin).
Nancy Pieper :
I'm making paper pieced Christmas ornaments

with the bows. Also am making appliques
homespun towels with blanket stitch trim.

DSikorski :
I have just started quilting 2 months ago and already love it. I am making table runners in the star block pattern. I am fussy cutting the squares to include the design tailored to the individual. For example on one I cut out squares of cats, on another cows, another one sunflowers, and on another one tea pots. I coordinated their special interest with the colors that they had in their home.
Karne :
I made stockings out of red felt from a Debbie Mumm pattern for everyone at work and filled it with different things they like, i.e., popcorn, hot chocolate, teas, etc.
Stephanie :
I am working very hard on my second quilt ever, a queen-sized Lone Star for my parents--it's made entirely out of scraps from clothing and costumes I have made through the years. Only other project I will get to is a tiny stocking for one of my roommates: I live in a loft with 4 other people; last year, I discovered a tiny stocking my mother had made me and made one for each of the roommates. Since then, 2 have left, and 1 has joined us, so he needs his.
Minabess Randolph :
I have made 2 Quillos, 3 fleece jackets for 3 granddaughters, a Superman quilt and pillow for grandson and today I Put Dallas Cowboy logos on two sweatshirts for 2 other grand daughters and I still have time to do more before 25th.
Deb :
Wow! I am very impressed by all that everyone has done! I am humbled... and creating vicariously through youall. I have had no sewing time this year and just recently begin to see a time where I will have quilting spaces in my life. Thanks for the inspiration! and have a terrific holiday!!
pat mc :
i have created several table topper quilts, 2 christmas tree skirts and a comforter. so far they have made GREAT hits! i have 2 pooh bears and 2 stockings to finish. one of the stockings is mine, so i know that one will be appreciated, too!!

Lisa J :
A quilt for each of my 4 gransons. A project I have worked on all year.
Laurene E :
Polar fleece hats, and my first quilt, a queen sized Irish triple chain. I've had fun, but haven't finished decorating the house with all the sewing. And working full time interferes with my fun time.
Deloise :
I have made several quilted Christmas Stockings. and a quilted tree skirt all for gifts this year. And also I have made several different holiday quilts.
I just hope every one likes their gift.

Leslie :
A miniature foundation-pieced quilt and crazy-quilted tree ornaments.
