Question of the Week

Question for the week of October 20, 1997:

Our question this week comes from Diane

I prefer not to use the nylon thread on top when machine quilting - what type of thread/s do you prefer (brand names) and what do you use in the bobbin when you use them? Any special secrets for success that goes along with your suggestions?

Marilyn :
I jjust recently had my Viking 500 serviced by a factory authorized service center and he recommended not using invisible thread as this wears on the parts of the machine through which the thread goes. My husband was also there and he said that sounded very logical - something about the friction. Have you heard of this before?

Judy :
I have had good luck with Coats $ Clark Rayon in the top and Metrosene Machine Embroidery in the bobbin (good match for backing farbric). Lengthen your stitch somewhat.
Janis :
I suggest that you use Invisible Thread in the top and bobbin. Results ,mine anyway, have been fantastic.
Jenny :
I use nylon thread almost 99% of the time because it allows me to travel from one place to another without seeing the double stitching, plus I do very extensive quilting like feathers and it gives me better results. I do use Mettler (Metrosene) when I use cotton thread. It seems to be the best quality
judy :
Make sure you don't use cone threads because they break.
Bea :
I like Mettler, 100% cotton, for the top and bobbin. If I use nylon thread in the top, I use Mettler cotton in the bobbin. I have also used Sulky rayon in the top with Mettler cotton in the bobbin.
Nan :
Last Spring I discovered Coats & Clark hand quilting thread works beautifully when used in the top and bobbin. You may have to adjust your tension slightly - try a few scrap "sandwiches" first. The thread is strong, and comes in a variety of colors.
