Question of the Week

Question for the week of June 9, 1997:

Our question this week comes from u8053@snet.net

I have several quilt designs that I feel are marketable as booklets and/or kits. How do I go about finding someone to carry my quilts in their catalogue?

Jaye Lapachet :
I would suggest trying to market them yourself first, perhaps on a Web site or at quilt shows. If people are interested, then Keepsake or others with catalogs might feel it is less of a risk to carry your designs. You might donate some of your designs as prizes to a quilt contest to get some name recognition. Good luck.

Anthony :
Classic marketing training says that every "yes" is preceeded by a question. Suggest you contact the catalogue companies directly. Provide a sample. See who bites. Keepsake Quilting catalogue carries not-so-well-known designers. Seek out a distributer such as Checkers. Check out the vendors at quilt markets (October in Houston is the grandma of markets) A word of caution. Be careful what you ask for, you might get it. Evaluate your own capacity. Can you prep and ship 200 units by Fri? Do you have an attractively packaged, market ready product? You know how quilters talk. Putting out a bad or unready product can tarnish your professional reputation for years to come.
