On the wrong side (back) of each Light square, draw a pencil line diagonally from corner to corner as shown at right. |
Layer one of these Light squares so itŐs right sides together with one of your Medium squares. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of the diagonal line you just drew. Next, cut the unit in half on the line you drew. (You should now have two half-square triangle units.) Repeat with your remaining 5 1/4" square sets. Press seam allowances toward your Medium fabric. |
Draw a diagonal line which crosses your first seam on half of the half-square triangle units you just made. Layer one of these right sides together with one of your unmarked half-square triangle units so the diagonal seams butt up against one another. In other words, the Medium fabric in one unit should lay on top of the Light fabric in the other unit. |
Once the seams are butted together, again sew a 1/4" seam on each side of the diagonal line you just drew. Cut the unit in half on the line you drew. Repeat with your remaining units. Press seam allowances to one side.
You should now have a total of 12 (20) [30] quarter-square triangle units which each measure 4 1/2" square. |
