April 2000 - 18" Block

Fabric

The Pharlemina's Favorite Block uses three different fabrics.

Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 one 9-1/2" square of fabric A
 sixteen 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of fabric B
 four 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles of fabric B
 eight 2" squares of fabric B
 four 5" squares of background fabric
 twelve 3-1/2" squares of background fabric
 four 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric
 eight 2" squares of background fabric


 Piecing the Block

 1) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the eight 2" fabric B squares as shown.
 2) Place one of the 2" marked fabric B squares, right side together with one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with three more of the 2" fabric B squares and the three remaining 2" x 3-1/2" background fabric rectangles.
 3) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B squares.
 4) Take one of the units completed in Step 3 and place one of the remaining 2" fabric B squares, right side together with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 3 units and the three remaining marked 2" fabric B squares.
 5) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B squares. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 6) Take two of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of fabric B and one of the units completed in Step 5 and piece together as shown. Repeat with six more of the 2" x 3-1/2" fabric B rectangles and the three remaining Step 5 units. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric B rectangles. These completed units should measure 2" x 9-1/2".
 7) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the twelve 3-1/2" background fabric squares as shown.
 8) Place one of the 3-1/2" marked background fabric square, right side together with one of the 3-/12" x 6-1/2" rectangles of fabric B with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with three more of the 3-1/2" background fabric squares and the three remaining 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" fabric B rectangles.
 9) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric squares.
 10) Take one of the units completed in Step 9 and place one of the remaining 3-1/2" marked background fabric squares, right side together with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 9 units and the three remaining marked 3-1/2" background fabric squares.
 11) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric squares. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 12) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the eight 2" background fabric squares as shown.
 13) Place one of the 2" marked background fabric squares, right side together with one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of fabric B with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with three more of the 2" background fabric squares and the three more 2" x 3-1/2" fabric B rectangles.
 14) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric squares. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
15) Place one of the 2" marked background fabric squares, right side together with one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of fabric B with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with three more of the 2" background fabric squares and the three more 2" x 3-1/2" fabric B rectangles. Note: These units are mirror images of the units completed in Step 14.
 16) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric squares. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 17) Take one of the units completed in Step 11, one of the units completed in Step 14 and one of the units completed in Step 16 and piece together as shown being sure to place the Step 14 and the Step 16 units correctly. Repeat with the three remaining Step 11, Step 14, and Step 16 units. Press the seam allowances away from the Step 11 units. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 9-1/2".
 18) Piece together one of the units from Step 6 and one of the units completed in Step 17 as shown. Repeat with the three remaining Step 6 and Step 17 units. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 17 units. The completed units should measure 5" x 9-1/2".
 19) Take one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric and the 9-1/2" square of fabric A and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.
 20) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square.
 21) Take one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric and the unit completed in Step 20 and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.
 22) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square.
 23) Take one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric and the unit completed in Step 22 and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.
 24) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square.
 25) Take the remaining 3-1/2" square of background fabric and the unit completed in Step 24 and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.
 26) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square. This completed unit should measure 9-1/2" square.
 27) Take the unit completed in Step 26 and two of the units completed in Step 18 and piece together as shown to make the center row of the quilt Block. The center row should measure 9-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 28) Take two of the 5" squares of background fabric and one of the units completed in Step 18 and piece together as shown to completed the top row of the quilt Block. Repeat with the final two 5" background fabric squares and the Step 18 unit to complete the bottom row of the quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric squares. The completed quilt Block rows should measure 5" x 18-1/2".
 29) Take the center row completed in Step 27 and the top and bottom rows completed in Step 28 and piece together as shown to completed the Pharlemina's Favorite quilt Block. Press the seam allowances away from the center row. The completed Pharlemina's Favorite quilt Block should measure 18-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
