June 2000 - 18" Block

 Bridal Path

Fabric

The Bridal Path Block uses four different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 Fabric - B

 Fabric - C

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 one strip 2" wide and at least 10" long of fabric A
 one strip 2" wide and at least 16" long of fabric A
 one 3-1/2" square of fabric B
 two strips 2" wide and at least 10" long of fabric B
 two strips 2" wide and at least 18" long of fabric B
 eight 5" squares of fabric C
 four strips 2" wide and at least 10" long of background fabric
 one strip 2" wide and at least 16" long of background fabric
 one strip 2" wide and at least 18" long of background fabric
 four 5" x 9-1/2" rectangles of background fabric


 Piecing the Block

 1) Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, piece together the 2" x at least 18" strip of background fabric with the two 2" x at least 18" strips of fabric B. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric B strips. The sewn strips should measure 5".
 2) With a rotary cutter, straighten one end of the strips pieced together in Step 1. Then cut eight 2"x 5" rectangles.
 3) Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, piece together the 2" x at least 10" strip of fabric B with the two 2" x at least 10" strips of background fabric. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric B strip. The sewn strips should measure 5".
 4) With a rotary cutter, straighten one end of the strips pieced together in Step 3. Then cut four 2"x 5" rectangles.
 5) Take two of the rectangles completed in Step 2 and one of the rectangles completed in Step 4 and piece together as shown to create a 9-patch square. Repeat with the six remaining Step 1 and the three remaining Step 4 rectangles. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 1 rectangles. The completed 9-patch squares should measure 5".
 6) On the wrong side of the 5" fabric C squares, lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 7) Place one of the 5" fabric C squares, right side together with one of the 5" x 9-1/2" rectangles of background fabric with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining 5" x 9-1/2" background fabric rectangles and three more of the 5" fabric C squares.
 8) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric C squares.
 9) Take one of the units completed in Step 8 and place one of the fabric C squares, right side together with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 8 units and the three remaining 5" fabric C squares.
 10) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric C squares. The completed "geese" units should measure 5" x 9-1/2".
 11) Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, piece together the 2" x at least 10" strip of fabric A with the 2" x at least 10" strip of background fabric. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric A strip. The sewn strips should measure 3-1/2" wide.
 12) With a rotary cutter, straighten one end of the strips pieced together in Step 11. Then cut four 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles.
 13) Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, piece together the 2" x at least 10" strip of fabric B with the 2" x at least 10" strip of background fabric. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric B strip. The sewn strips should measure 3-1/2" wide.
 14) With a rotary cutter, straighten one end of the strips pieced together in Step 13. Then cut four 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles.
 15) Take one of the rectangles completed in Step 12 and one of the rectangles completed in Step 14 and piece together as shown to complete a 4-patch square. Repeat with the remaining three Step 12 and Step 14 rectangles. Press the seam allowances in either direction. The completed 4-patch squares should measure 3-1/2".
 16) Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, piece together the 2" x at least 16" strip of fabric A with the 2" x at least 16" strip of background fabric. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric A strip. The sewn strips should measure 3-1/2" wide.
 17) With a rotary cutter, straighten one end of the strips pieced together in Step 16. Then cut four 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" squares.
 18) Piece together two of the Step 17 squares and the 3-1/2" square of fabric B as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 17 squares.
 19) Take two of the 4-patch squares completed in Step 15 and one of the squares completed in Step 17 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining two Step 15 squares and the remaining Step 17 square. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 17 squares.
 20) Take the unit completed in Step 18 and the two units completed in Step 19 and piece together as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 17 unit. The completed unit should measure 9-1/2" square.
 21) Take the unit completed in Step 20 and two of the flying geese units completed in Step 10 and piece together as shown to create the center row of the Block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 20 unit. The completed row should measure 9-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 22) Piece two of the 9-patch square units completed in Step 5 and one of the flying geese units completed in Step 10 as shown to complete the top row of the Block. Repeat with the two remaining Step 5 units and the remaining Step 10 unit to complete the bottom row of the Block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 5 squares. The completed rows should measure 5" x 18-1/2".
 23) Piece together the center row completed in Step 21 and the top and bottom rows completed in Step 22 as shown to complete the Bridal Path Block. Press the seam allowances toward the center of the Block. The completed Bridal Path quilt Block should measure 18-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
