Block of the Month II

February 1999 - 6" Block

 Pale Star

Fabric

The Pale Star Block uses three different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 Fabric - B

 One background fabric

Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 one 2-3/8" x 4-3/4" rectangle of fabric A
 one 2-3/8" x 4-3/4" rectangle of fabric B
eight 2" squares of fabric A
four 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric

 Piecing the Block

 1) Take the 2-3/8" x 4-3/4" rectangle of fabric B and on the wrong side, lightly mark a line 2-3/8" from the short edge of the rectangle, dividing the rectangle into two squares. Then mark a diagonal line through the center of each of the squares as shown.
 2) Take the 2-3/8" x 4-3/4" rectangle of fabric A and the marked rectangle of fabric and place right sides together, with the edges even, and the marked rectangle on the top. Carefully sew 1/4" away from each of the diagonal ines as shown.
 3) Carefully cut the sewn rectangles on the marked lines as shown. Press seam allowances toward the darker fabric. This will result in four 2" half-square triangles.
 4) Take four of the 2" squares of fabric A and piece with the half square triangles completed in Step 3 as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric A square. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 5) Lightly mark a diagonal line as shown on the wrong side of the the four remaining 2" fabric A squares.
 6) Take one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and place, right sides together, with one of the marked 2" squares of fabric A. Make sure the diagonal ine is laced as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining background fabric rectangles and fabric A squares.
 7) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward fabric A. The resulting rectangle should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 8) Take one of the units completed in Step 4 and one of the units completed in Step 7 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 4 and Step 7 rectangles. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 4 units. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" square.
 9) Take two of the units completed in Step 8 and piece together as shown, making sure that the units are "pointing" in the right direction. Repeat with the two remaining Step 8 units. Press the seam allowances to the left. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 10) Finish the Pale Star quilt Block by joining the two units completed in Step 9. Press the seam allowance in either directions. The completed quilt Block should measure 6-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
