August 1999 - 12" Block

Fabric

The Green Mountain Star Block uses three different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 Fabric - B

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 one 3-1/2" square of fabric A
 eight 2" squares of fabric A
 twenty-four 2" squares of fabric B
 eight 3-1/2" squares of background fabric
 four 2" squares of background fabric
 twelve 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric


 Piecing the Block

 1) On the wrong side of the twenty-four 2" squares of fabric B lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 2) Take one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and place one of the 2" marked fabric B squares, right sides together, on top of the rectangle with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with three more 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and three more 2" fabric B squares.
 3) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B squares. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 4) Take one of the units completed in Step 3 and one of the 2" background fabric squares and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 3 units and three more of the 2" background fabric squares. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square. The completed units should measure 2" x 4-1/2".
 5) Take one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and place one of the 2" marked fabric B squares, right sides together, on top of the rectangle with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with three more 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and three more 2" fabric B squares.
 6) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B squares. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 7) Take one of the units completed in Step 6 and one of the 3-1/2" background fabric squares and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 6 units and three more of the 3-1/2" background fabric squares. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 5".
 8) Take one of the units completed in Step 4 and one of the units completed in Step 7 and piece them together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 4 and Step 7 units. Press the seam allowance toward the Step 7 unit. These completed units should measure 5" square.
 9) Take one of the remaining 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and place one of the 2" marked fabric B squares, right sides together, on top of the rectangle with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with last three 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and three more 2" fabric B squares.
 10) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B squares.
 11) Take one of the units from Step 10 and place one of the 2" marked fabric B squares, right sides together, on top of the unit with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 10 and three more 2" fabric B squares.
 12) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B squares. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 13) On the wrong side of the eight 2" squares of fabric A lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 14) Take one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric and place one of the 2" marked fabric A squares, right sides together, on top of the square with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with three remaining 3-1/2" squares of background fabric and three more 2" fabric A squares.
 15) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric A squares.
 16) Take one of the units from Step 15 and place one of the 2" marked fabric A squares, right sides together, on top of the square with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with three remaining Step 15 units and three remaining 2" fabric A squares.
 17) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric A squares.
 18) Take one of the units from Step 17 and place one of the 2" marked fabric B squares, right sides together, on top of the square with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with three remaining Step 17 units and three more 2" fabric B squares.
 19) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B squares.
 20) Take one of the units from Step 19 and place one of the 2" remaining marked fabric B squares, right sides together, on top of the square with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with three remaining Step 19 units and three 2" fabric B squares.
 21) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B squares. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" square.
 22) Take one of the units completed in Step 21 and one of the units completed in Step 12 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the three remaining Step 21 and Step 12 units. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 12 unit. These completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 5".
 23) Take two of the units completed in Step 22 and piece together with the 3-1/2" square of fabric A as shown to complete the center of the Green Mountain Star quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the 3-1/2" fabric A square. The completed row should measure 3-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 24) Take one of the units completed in Step 22 and two of the Step 8 units and piece together as shown to form the top row of the quilt Block. Repeat with the final Step 22 unit and Step 8 units to form the bottom row of the quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 8 units. These completed Block rows should measure 5" x 12-1/2".
 25) Take the row completed in Step 23 and the two rows completed in Step 24 and piece together as shown to completed the Green Mountain Star quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the center of the Block. The completed quilt Block should measure 12-1/2" square which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
