 One background fabric

Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of Fabric A
five 4-1/2" squares of Fabric B
 one 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" rectangle of Fabric A
one 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" rectangle of background fabric
sixteen 2-1/2" squares of background fabric

 Piecing the Block

 1) On the wrong side of the 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" background light draw a line 2-7/8" from the short edge. This line should divide the rectangle in to two equal squares. Next, draw a diagonal line as shown to divide each of the squares in half.
 2) Carefully place the 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" of Fabric A together with the marked 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" of background fabric, right sides together and marked side of the background rectangle facing up. Making sure that the edges remain aligned, sew 1/4" away from the marked diagonal lines as shown.

3) Carefully cut the unit completed in Step 2 on the marked lines as shown. Press the seam allowances toward Fabric A. This should result in four 2-1/2" half square triangle units.
 4) Take one of the units completed in Step 3 and one of the 2-1/2" background fabric squares and piece together as shown. Be sure to have the half-square triangle unit "pointed" in the right directions. Press the seam allowance toward the 2-1/2" background fabric square. Repeat with one more Step 3 unit and one more 2-1/2" background fabric square. This should result in two units with a finished size of 2-1/2" x 4-1/2".
 5) Take one of the units remaining completed in Step 3 and one of the 2-1/2" background fabric squares and piece together as shown. Note that the half-square triangle "points in the opposite directions of the unit completed in Step 4. Press the seam allowance toward the 2-1/2" background fabric square. Repeat with the last Step 3 unit and one more 2-1/2" background fabric square. This should result in two units with a finished size of 2-1/2" x 4-1/2".
 6) Take the twelve remaining 2-1/2" background fabric squares and lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the squars as shown.
 7) Take one of the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of Fabric A and one of the 2-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with one more of the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of Fabric A and one more 2-1/2" of background fabric.

8) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric. This should result in two 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" completed rectangle unit.
 9) Take one of the remaining 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of Fabric A and one of the 2-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Note, this unit "points" in the opposite direction of that completed in Step 8. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the last of the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of Fabric A and one more 2-1/2" of background fabric.

10) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric. This should result in two 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" completed rectangle unit.

11) Take one of the units completed in Step 4 and one of the units completed in Step 8 and piece together as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the Step 8 unit. Repeat with the remaining Step 4 and Step 8 unit. This will result in two completed 4-1/2" square units.

12) Take one of the units completed in Step 6 and one of the units completed in Step 10 and piece together as shown. Note - This unit is the mirror image of the unit completed in Step 11. Press the seam allowance toward the Step 10 unit. Repeat with the remaining Step 6 and Step 10 unit. This will result in two completed 4-1/2" square units.
 13) Take one of the 4-1/2" Fabric B squares and one of the 2-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with three more 4-1/2" squares Fabric B and three more 2-1/2" background fabric squares.

14) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
 15) Take one of the units completed in Step 14 and one of the 2-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown.
