Hi I think you just opened a big can of worms.....gg
There is no comparison. No doubt the 1630 is a very good machine but the
180 offers so much more.

HI Hancey -

One excellent source is the Bernina website at: www.berninausa.com Click
on SEWING STUDIO: then click on LEARNING CENTER then go down to: SEW A
STITCH. There you will find a technique for bobbin roses.... with pictures
of how it looks. Looks very interesting - I will have to try it :)

Just a thawt -
Judy

Does anyone have a web site with some pictures? I'm wondering what bobbin
work looks like, does it only show on the bottom or is it supposed to pull
to the top similar to the 'faux' quilt stitch?

Wondering,

Haven't heard about the 1008 being discontinued - if so I would think it is
being replaced as it is the only current mechanical model I know of. Maybe
it is the 180 being discontinued? That rings a bell?

Can't really compare it to the other models, as it is the only one I have
really worked with.

BUT I have had my 1008 for 18 months and I have been nothing but pleased
with it. It has sewed on many different fabrics, done garments and quilts
and various other things. It has gone to classes with me on public transit
and not caused me a moment of worry. It has sewn for hours on end and has
sat unused for weeks at a time, and neither has caused a quiver of
complaint.

Sure I'd like a knee lift, and not having to hold onto the knob when sewing
in reverse, and a feather stitch and buttonhole stitch would come in
handy...but for the price and the fact that you will never have to worry
about computers or electronics going wonky so the machine will last
*forever*...I'd recommend it!

Kelly.

Thanks for sharing that! I hadn't explored that bit or Bernina's site,
and found a couple of other stitches there that were also interesting.

I'm off to experiment!

Does the 180 have a built in stitch designer component now? I always felt
that was one of the best components of the 1630, along with all the other
features it has as a domestic sewing machine. Since the 180 is an
embroidery/sewing machine combination I think it is in a different category
if we are making comparisons. Just my opinion. Both are excellent
machines.

For someone who wanted to see a picture of some bobbin work, there is one on
the Berninausa site, under projects. There is even a project using this
technique. I bet it would look great on crazy quilt squares, with silks or
satins and satin ribbon. Now you all have my creative juices going. I had
forgotton about this technique, too!
